I live in Singapore. The drop-down list for Time Zone under NTP Client Settings has the following options:
Code:
<select name="time_zone">
...
<option value="Asia/Singapore" selected="selected">Asia/Singapore</option>
...
<option value="Etc/GMT+8">Etc/GMT+8</option>
...
<option value="Singapore">Singapore</option>
...
</select>

Which option should I select?
Is there any difference between these options?

Both are the same so it does not matter.

But Singapore is the old naming, maybe one day they will remove it so Asia/Singapore is the preferred one.

I would think that Asia/Singapore is correct - if the router time matches your local time then there is no doubt.

the "Etc" are special time zones that are POSIX compatible Etc/GMT+1 is in reality GMT-1

I have also wondered about the Etc timezones and asked BS about it

both Singapore and Asia/Singapore give the correct time. I haven't tried GMT+8 but I think it will also give the correct time (or at least some other GMT offset will).
The reason I ask is that I recently realized my Dlink DIR-868L Rev.A1 didn't show channel 12 & 13 under 2.4GHz settings. After poking around including changing time zone from Singapore to Asia/Singapore then channel 12+13 shown up, but I'm not sure if it's a fluke or there's some deep meaning behind those time zone options.

No Etc/GMT+8 will not give the correct time because as already mentioned Etc/GMT+8 is in reality GMT-8

regarding the channels I would be very surprised because they are not regulated by the time zone but by the regulatory domain

The options are straight out of the tzdata database files. It has not been decided to make things more simpler and reduce redundant or confusing options. Tomato has not even bothered to update to current data.

regarding the regulatory domain, that option has disappeared from DIR-868L Rev.A1 for a few years. Currently the workaround is to load the old ddwrt firmware, change the regulatory domain setting, then upgrade to the newest firmware, I'm not sure if there's any command to change the nvram directly. But this is not related to the topic so we can discuss in details elsewhere.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

Regulatory domain is a global setting. It only appears once in the webUI. This has been normal for a while...

Just pick the one that's similiar to GMT+8. It doesn't have to be "Singapore". The same goes to Hong Kong which is my time zone.

did you read the thread ?

Quote:
SG, MY Asia/Singapore Singapore, peninsular Malaysia Canonical +08:00 +08:00 +08 asia
Etc/GMT+8 Canonical −08:00 −08:00 -08 etcetera

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tz_database#Area

The special area of "Etc" is used for some administrative zones, particularly for "Etc/UTC" which represents Coordinated Universal Time. In order to conform with the POSIX style, those zone names beginning with "Etc/GMT" have their sign reversed from the standard ISO 8601 convention. In the "Etc" area, zones west of GMT have a positive sign and those east have a negative sign in their name (e.g "Etc/GMT-14" is 14 hours ahead of GMT).

By the way, all the zones are listed under the following link.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tz_database_time_zones#List

there you can also see that singapore is a link to asia/singapore

Quote:
Canonical - The primary, preferred zone name.
Link - An alternative name (alias) which links to a canonical zone.
Link†
- A standard Link (as above). The dagger symbol (†) signifies that the zone was canonical in a previous version of the database. Historical data for such zones is still preserved in the source code, but it is not included when compiling the database with standard options.

and for Hong Kong is "Asia/Hong_Kong" the current and correct time zone name and nothing else

see also

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_Standard_Time

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_Time

It is true that the countries in the GMT+8 zone all have the same time, but this was not always the case.
For example, DST (Daylight saving time) plays a role.

And the question of the thread creator was what is the correct time zone for Singapore and not what is a wrong time zone that leads to the same result.
