up until now I've been running a vpn (using openvpn) on a client linux box but now I'd like to try it on a router flashed with openvpn-capable-dd-wrt.
so my question is can anyone recommend a router that is good for this? I want to use the router as a gateway/client device that connects to a VPN provider, so that every device on the lan will be in the tunnel.
I've flashed routers before with ddwrt but they were older routers (linksys wrt54g) and the firware didn't support openvpn. thanks for any recommendations.

hmmm it depends...
-PC box still holds the records...
-depends from your ISP speed and VPN provider
-your target WAN speed delivered
-R7800 or XR500 best price performance support router...it does somewhere about 100MBit+ over openVPN,..but it does around 200Mbit using Wireguard
-R9000 or R8900 or XR700 it has quad core CPU so it does a bit more than R7800...(sadly it has a complicated switch, that is vlan capable, but requires a deeper understanding...) _________________ Atheros

Unless i misunderstood your point, i honestly thought the setting up of VLANs in Netgear R9000 is well sorted out. (See linked article, v4.5, below). _________________ Life is a journey; travel alone makes it less enjoyable and lonely.

Yep, no offense at all.. R9000 is an excellent unit with 'mother in law issues'(bad radio heatsink design and bad cooling in general and a dual combo switch)...and you've done excellent job doing that VLAN guide...full marks...!!
Big Thanks to DWCruiser and Fozzi, im using some vlans on it... _________________ Atheros

And keep in mind the NVRAM size. 32KB is not much for storing the basic configuration data and keys. You better look for 60KB or 64KB units. _________________ If you want support, please read first the announcements and forum rules.

check for AES-NI support on the cpu, these all are capable to run DD-WRT x64 professional license (cost 20$) , i use one myself for testing ... you can add also a wifi module , for dd-wrt is QCA9880/QCA9882/QCA9994/QCA9984 Chipset based module recommended and newer mediatek MT7615 and MT7915/MT7916 chipset modules
there is one system with 6x ethernet 2.5Gbit NICs and Intel i7-1165G7 CPU for 480 USD , which is a pretty powerful device , yet very low power consumption and passive cooled ...
