I got a r9000 coming in about two days. I’m going to put the newest dd-wrt fw on it so I can run a vpn on the network. I have a few questions in regards to speeds and gaming. First I’m pretty sure I know the answer, I can turn the vpn on/off and modify location when I want to correct? Then for speeds, I want to have the wired connection be the best it can to my Xbox series x. Can I “turn down” the wireless to help with this or does that help significantly at all? Researching QoS to prioritize the Xbox aswell. Kind of new to all this networking stuff and terms so go easy on me. Edit: see that qos only applies to wireless if I’m not mistaken, and Xbox will be direct connected to the r9000. We do stream and use wireless currently and don’t really have problems with speed/buffering. Just want to maximize the gaming connection. Or anyone have suggestions with what they use? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum
The R9000 is one of the fastest routers currently supported by DDWRT.
It is Qualcomm/Atheros based so I will transfer this thread to the appropriate forum.
See the forum guidelines with helpful pointers about how to research your router, where and what firmware to download, where and how to post and many other helpful tips:

Latest build is 50755 but I would wait for the next one, this one has some cosmetic issues.
For the fastest VPN use WireGuard, both WireGuard and OpenVPN documentation are stickies in the Advanced Networking forum which should guide you through the process of setting up.
Thank you sir! By cosmetic issues what do you mean? I was hoping to run a vpn on it this weekend when I get it. I have express vpn right now but it’s a 30 day trial and to be honest not sure I’m happy with it when gaming. I downloaded the latest firmware to be ready to set this thing up come thirsday or Friday but now you got me worried lol. I’m guessing I won’t need qos as I’m running it wired to the Xbox. Still going to go through the stickies and set it up accordingly when I get it as long as you’re not teling me not to go through with that version and wait…

Cosmetic issues means a small minority of settings are not translated properly, it is just cosmetic everything runs fine.
It is corrected and I run 50786 as we speak and it runs fine, I am connected with WireGuard to Keepsolid as we speak and get around 110 Mb/s on my R7000, your R9000 should do well over 300 Mb/s running WireGuard.
I think Express VPN lets you download a WireGuard Config file and setting up should be as simple ass clicking "Import Configuration", pointing to the config file and after importing, check settings and hit "Apply"
Sounds good! I may just cancel express vpn since it’s a paid subscription and run wire gaurd.. I’ll look into it. All I’m using it for is making my location for a different country while gaming lol.. less competitive gaming in other countries.
Looks like I still need a subscription to something to run wire gaurd… sorry new to this but trying to research what I can so I can get this all put together this weekend.

Well I would indeed choose a provider which supports not only OpenVPN on the router but also WireGuard on the router (and maybe supports port forwarding via the VPN).
I mean it looks like google cloud which is free supports both openvpn and wire cloud. Is that a viable option to setup? Or what services would you recommend? Sorry if being a complete noob here.

I have never done it with Google cloud, I have an Oracle Cloud server running which runs an OpenVPN and WireGuard server and runs pretty decent, speeds are OK (about 50 Mb/s), you get what you pay for (it is also free)
So certainly running your own VPS is an option, but note your are probably not as anonymous as when using a VPN provider.
The WireGuard Server setup guide has some instructions for AWS (Amazon Web Services) and for an Oracle Cloud server.
Will do! Or post what I go with. Probably going to look into what the fastest free options are and test them out lol cuz why not free is free unless I need more speed which I don’t really foresee just for gaming should be good I hope. Not really worried about being anonymous just need it for location
This was more confusing than I realized lol.. I did the oracle cloud route like you, I followed that guy's youtube video in the guide but am stuck.. I have no clue where to get this config file from.. so far when activating wireguard I just have no internet at all.. Any advice on oracle and getting the config file so I can continue to follow that guide from the sticky?
Thanks bud, I got it with a random youtube video I followed.. Got the config file imported just waiting to test but it works through my phone.
My only other question I am researching right now is can I change the location that the wireguard vpn in showing? I want to change it so I can game in a different country.
