I have an older Linksys WRT54G router I use for IP cameras only. It has DDWRT firmware to make it a repeater and it has 13" 9db high gain antennas. My question is as far as only reception is concerned is a newer router going to give me farther reception signal or are those antennas about as good as I can get for distance? Thank you for any advice.

If your main concern is reception per se, you have to look for Receiver Sensitivity (dBm), for instance, an old Linksys WRH54G specify: 11Mbps at -87dBm (Typical), and 54Mbps at -70dBm (Typical). Of course, if you have "real 9dB gain" antennas you could receive 9dB less of signal for the same RSSI.

But there are other factors to consider such as diversity (antenna diversity, etc.). The WRT54G series uses two, that helps to process faint signals. Other routers have 3 or 4 (external and/or internal) antennas. Anyways, evolution of those concepts are MIMO (let's call it SU-MIMO) and its variants, MU-MIMO, and beamforming. So there are many factors that could help to achieve a better reception. But without a better context for your question, one could only enumerate options.
