So trying to get the first 2 routers (R7800 - 50313) running in mesh mode.
Done a full reset on all the routers
Both are set to 802.11s with the same name, same channels
I have tried with and without WPA3 passwords
Neither router is able to see each other
If I put them back into WDS mode they will work
I did read that post a late 49xxx release Mesh had been improved and this is the first chance I have to try, but still not luck here

Some of your settings are described here, but it's hard to tell where the issue is without more info. Are you trying to use 2.4ghz or 5ghz for mesh? What channel width? Are you using VAPs?
In July I did a mesh setup for my sister with 6 EA8500s. Because it's an old house with solid brick interior walls, I setup the mesh on 2.4ghz. It would only work with 20mhz channel width and no security. enabling VAPs also broke it. Fortunately, most devices support 5ghz, so this wasn't an issue. I've been curious about the mentioned recent improvements, but I won't be back there to try for several months. _________________ Current devices:

I did a short distance Mesh test on my bench back in early Sept. I could get it to work but as you described without security. I didn't try a VAP because it was only on my desk. I can't implement Mesh without at least WPA2 + AES security.
As you can tell from my signature, I maintain a fairly large WDS network. _________________ Before asking a question on the forums, update dd-wrt: Where do I download firmware? I suggest reading it all.

So had another play today and getting there
On each router I configured it just for a Mesh 802.11s
The wifi name is blah_5g_mesh
AC/N Mixed
channel 48
extension channel LL (-6)
VHT-80
No VAP
After a few minutes, I was able to ping each router and the internet
I then set the WPA password (WPA3-Personal, AES) and again, they all started to ping after a while
Even though I have said to show the SSID for the mesh, it is not visible to my kit - I may hide it anyway, but see below.
So on the 2g, each AP has the primary 2G as as blah_2g and a VAP which is the location of the router (office_2g) - all working fine as far as I can tell.
So far so good, but if I want a device to connect via 5G, how do I do that ? I have read that you should not add a VAP to band that is running the Mesh, but I have a number of devices I want to connect to 5G rather than 2G, and that is then my problem of the Mesh SSID not being visible

Any ideas ?
Well, it is not that you "SHOULD NOT" it is that when you add a VAP to the band that is running the mesh, that radio crashes, in your case the 5G radio. At least that is what used to happen.
I am more worried about WPA3 + AES being the only option for Mesh. I have some routers on my network that can't use WPA3. Not to mention, I would have to still broadcast a VAP with WPA2 + AES for +90% of my client devices. _________________ Before asking a question on the forums, update dd-wrt: Where do I download firmware? The crashing still happens then. (50357 now installed)
as soon as I added a VAP I was not able to get the Mesh back up.
I have added another VAP on the 2G with my old 5G name to get things running as they were. I'd prefer the mesh and everything over 2G than the WDS where everything was dependendt on the WDS Station.
The security only gives WPA/WPA3 as the options besides disabled.

I was using routers that don't have an option for drivers, D-Link DIR-862L (2.4GHz) and DIR-825 B1 (2.4GHz). _________________ Before asking a question on the forums, update dd-wrt: Where do I download firmware? I suggest reading it all.

Can you post a screenshot (uploaded as a zip file is best) of your Wifi settings & Wifi Security Settings on both gateway and station routers? Mesh (802.11s), not WDS, has only been added in 2020 and 2021. There is not even an actual Wiki page for Mesh yet.
As for the time issue, just use the NTP client at the bottom of the Setup page. Don't put anything in the box, select the appropriate timezone and click apply. As long as the router has internet access it will get the date and time. _________________ Before asking a question on the forums, update dd-wrt: Where do I download firmware? It also needs to point at a valid DNS server. A few years ago I spent way too long trouble-shooting time issues before realizing the APs won't automatically get it from the gateway. _________________ Current devices:

No, not NTP server IP or domain, but DNS server IP address, both local and external.
External I use either OpenDNS or Google DNS. Local DNS, the main router that hands out the DHCP addresses.
Several of my routers, I go to enable the encryption and there is no box to type in the password. I can select WPA3 + AES but there is no pass word box, even if I click Save. This was the last time I tried it, see one of my above posts for the build number. _________________ Before asking a question on the forums, update dd-wrt: Where do I download firmware?
