I have a very, very modest routing requirement (redirecting DNS requests from Google devices so that they don't go to 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4). This used to work with static routing, but apparently something changed recently and now I need IP tables.

The budget for this is very limited and I'd like to spend less than $50; the amount of traffic will be trivial and I don't need high performance. I have tried to find quite a large number of the routers from the compatibility list at Amazon (I'm in Spain, so that's my main supplier), but still haven't found one under €150. I got excited about the Asus RT-N12 which is very cheap, but it's the RT-N12E and that's clearly marked as not compatible.

Does anyone have tips for cheap hardware that is available today?

I have been happy with my "tplink Archer C7 V5". It is available in US for under $90 USD.

second hand on E-bay or Amazon will do... Netgear R6400v2, R6800, R6850, R7000 (preferred), R7200, R7450, R7800 (preferred), R9000...
or the new Netgear XR line(reboxed old R line) XR 300, XR 500, XR 700 ...

some of those you can get on very decent price... Cool

eBay. I’ve bought 3 working Netgear XR500 for under $ 50.00 delivered. 1 was $ 18.00 (missing 1 antenna but I bought a nonworking for parts for less than 10.00 and resold for more minus parts I wanted). Just be patient and make offers. 2 of the 3 working I obtained through offers.

The EA8500 is also a great option, the last one I got was only $37 on ebay, including shipping. I got two others last year for around $45 each.
