I have tried ddwrt on this router before, and I have used it on several other routers in the past. Last time I tried to use it on my 7500v2 the wireless range (5g) was pretty bad and I wasnt able to setup my Chroemcast in a room directly above the router, but with the Netgear firmware it had no problem connecting.

Now Im having issues with the latest Netgear firmware (like everyone else has with this router) with the wifi constantly dropping out. Ive factory reset multiple times and no change.

I only use this router as an AP. I dont need any other extra features other than it just sending my wifi traffic down to my pfsense box. What is the way to go about setting up ddwrt to run as an AP only and getting the max out of wifi. I dont have any wired devices plugged into it other than the one line connecting to the main switch.

Is the wifi stable enough for 5g? Are there any speed issues? last I use ddwrt it would only support half the speeds that the official firmware ran at.

I have no problem just testing it out, but I always have to do that 2am or later when no one is using wifi so I dont get complaints from family that Im messing with the internet again.

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but do I have the same 5Ghz radio as you (QCA9980) and r43813 was the last build to use the old wifi driver firmware binary on my EA8500.

Not sure what speeds you are expecting but be sure to configure Regulatory Domain, Channel Width, Extension Channel then Wireless Channel. Use the upper 5Ghz channel range 149-165 and you may want to adjust TX Power (e.g. 30dbm) accordingly.

Some client devices may not behave with the lower channel range 36-48, also for example US region this is limited to 23dbm.

Anything in between these two is DFS range, so YMMV. Hard Reset after first boot into DD-WRT. Save and Reboot, ignore Apply.

I use one of my EA8500 with dd-wrt configured and as a AP and Ethernet switch. Here’s the short list for my config

Setup Tab
Connection type disabled
Assigned IP address, subnet and gateway
Assign WAN port to Switch
Disable DHCP Server
Optional: NTP
Shortcut Forwarding Engine - disabled

Advanced Router Tab
Operating Mode = Router

Security Tab
SPI Firewall disabled

Services Tab
Dnsmaq Disabled

Administration Tab
Routing Disabled

We recently switched back to fiber (but not the gig speed this time) and speed reliability are great again. This is the Fios 200/200 over the the ea8500's 5ghz band with msoengineer's Best Wifi settings. Verizon does over provision so speeds do vary but most times never receive less than our advertised speed.

I've tried multiple builds, and had issues similar to yours, basically you have 2 options:

1) Latest BS build (e.g. r43904)
2) Latest Kong's build r40270

Considering r7500v2 has an older WiFi I suggest using the Kong's build, it's super-duper stable, but might not have most updated features. Latest BS builds are also great (in-kernel samba, wireguard, etc).

Also for 5GhZ channels if you are in US, note that from ~year 2015 channels [36;52) are limited to 23dBm, so I suggest using 149 and up which are 30dBm. However, please keep in mind that if you are not in U.S. android&google devices will follow the local rules and might not support certain bands (e.g. in the place I live 149 and up are not allowed), so WMMV
