I commented out "chroot" clause in my /jffs/etc/unbound.conf, and unbound-checkconf didn't report any errors! I have been using this unbound.conf for months.
Code:
# grep chroot /jffs/etc/unbound.conf
# chroot: ""
# unbound-checkconf /jffs/etc/unbound.conf
unbound-checkconf: no errors in /jffs/etc/unbound.conf
Could it be something else? White spaces? Incomplete quotation marks? Bad commas?
Mind to attach your unbound.conf? I don't see it in the ticket....

root@DD-WRT:/jffs/etc# unbound-checkconf /jffs/etc/unbound.conf
/tmp/jffs/etc/: No such file or directory
[1662796337] unbound-checkconf[18022:0] fatal error: bad chdir directory
Did you notice the difference in the 2 paths. The one with error was "/tmp/..."!
Somehow unbound-checkconf was not using the path+file you specified?
