Hi all !

Sorry for beating this topic to death. But in the wiki is a link to a bug report on mantis and if i read that correctly, it details that

0x3758 is the most efficent bord flag for the whr-hp-g54 and that will be the default setting for future releases.

link here:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/WHR-HP-G54

and here :

http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/bugtracker/view.php?id=2776

I have personally been unable to see any gain from this. Quite the contrary, it actually seemd to get worse.

I changed the settings and added two pics. Name of the file indicates wich flag setting was used.

So again the call for all WHR-HP-G54 users. please try the settings and post your findings. It would really stink to get a wrong default flag setting in the upcomming firmware releases.

regards

tec

Furthermore there seems to be a typo somewhere.

This is a copy past from the wiki :

0x3758 - both amp and enhanced receive sensitivity 'on' - this is the one you want!

This is a copy paste from the bugtracker.

Boardflags 0x3578 should be the default setting on a WHR-HP-G54.
0x2578, the current default, does not turn on the enhanced receive sensitivity.

Notice the difference between the flag attributes.

Something is awry there. Please somone have a look.

Thank you.

regards

tec

I just spent 2 hours running site surveys with various settings. The end result is very clear after running numerous tests and comparing back and forth. 0x2758 and 0x0758 are both identical in performance. 0x1758 and 0x3758 are identical. The first pair has 3 dB stronger signal for the stations that it can see and with 12 dB less noise, as compared to the second pair. This results in a S/N ratio improvement of about 15 dB. It is clearly obvious that the 0x2758 setting (or 0x0758) is better when running the HP radio with no amp. I did not test with the hawking amp because it is too cold to climb the fucking tower right now, but I know the other setting works better when using an HP radio with an amplifier that has a pre-amp. Those other funny looking numbers from the other websites look like they were referring to the regular buffalo, not the HP model.

Could someone link to this thread from the wiki then, for the time being until we can reach a conclusion on what info goes in the Wiki?

There was hearsay added to the wiki along the lines of "I heard this other guy said he had problems with this setting" with no real tests or specifics or first-hand experience, or links to infos.

I did repeated real-world tests of several hours over several weeks (different conditions & configurations) and found in marginal circumstances, setting 0x3758, made the difference between no signal (before) and usable signal afterwards. Certainly there is a wide variety of specific applications and a lot of variability on the part of settings. My environments are a small slice.

Question: It may be turning down the receive sensitivity is blocking additional noise [other signals] from being brought in? What do you think?

What environments are the owners operating in? Metro, suburban, roof-top, inside multi-room dwelling?

What are the transmit levels owners are using?

And who is experiencing a better signal with BroadRange off (0x2758) while using an external amp? While use of an external amp doesn't apply to most owners, it should be noted.

Regards.

My case (Between 15m , indoor, clean space)

Boardflags 0x3578 setting on a WHR-HP-G54.
The TX Power set a 4 mW , cutting off power supply to reboot.
In the receiving can be very good signal (better txpower 28mW)

Magic?

One would say that Brainslayer can get the REAL answer straight from Buffalo now, since the teaming up...

Before, he was writing software for just some other company's stuff, no help from them to be expected of course. But now, he is actually SUPPOSED to write good firmware for Buffalo's products, so.....

BS?

Stranger still.... This is a curious little radio for sure. I turned the antenna to get a different set of stations with more variety in strengths. It appears that the stronger the signal is the stronger the amplifier boosts it. Weaker signals seem to have less difference in loss/gain when switching the amp from one setting to the other. In other words, weak stations in the range of -85 only improve by 3 or 4 dB when the amp is on. Stronger stations in the area of -55 improve by 12 or 15 dB. The noise levels seem to amplify on a non linear scale as well. Either there is some sort of AGC at play, a non linear roll-off by design, or some cheap quality amplifier design. I am going to guess it is one of the first 2. This would help explain why different setups are experiencing different kinds of results. With a variety of signal strengths and noise levels that we each have, it is easy to see why one setting works better for some of us when the other setting is better for others. Then again, I might just be trippin' Confused
How is that for diplomacy ?

I would think he should be able to talk to an engineer at Buffalo and get straight answers on all the open questions about the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 radio.

I just now made the boardflag change (from 0x2 to 0x3)

on a buffalo HP client on v23sp2 on a 4 mile link.

before(0x2) : rssi -46 noise -77 snr 31
after(0x3): rssi -47 noise -90 snr 43

at the AP side, SNR remained the same at 26

I can provide before/after on a couple of more, but this is totally consistent with the other half dozen I've done this to.

This boardflag issue seems to be the most interesting and talked about threads over the past few months with many opinions and answers. For those of us that don't know about boardflags or how to check and change them I ask. After putting DD-WRT on a new WHR-HP-G54 (rc-5) what boardflag config do I end up with and should it be changed. Is it the same with the WHR-g125. Sounds like if you use an external amp it makes a difference.

Just wondering if this boardflag thing makes any difference on the Whr54 GS too???I haven't tried changing mine since I've went to V24 just left it the way the firmware has it which I think is 0x2. Anyway just wondering if anyone else has checked.

no, kb9klc, these flags mean different things on each different board.

you can't turn on/off features that are not there and may mess something else up by tampering with them.

Billbahamas if you have an hp then yes disable internal amp for use with external amp and lower the power on the wireless/advanced page.

OK thank you. I hadn't messed with the settings on the boardflags for exactly that reason. Again Thanks.
