Best bet Netgear R7800 or XR500 second hand, with option to return if you cannot flash it to DDWRT...as those could have a bad blocks...in flash memory...i never had a bad one, so far i got 20+ R7800 second hand form ebay/amazon for different projects...
R7800 is the best price/performance/ddwrt support router... _________________ Atheros

I think you are going the wrong way with this, if you want DD-WRT/OpenWRT support and opensource drivers support, the recommended Atheros devices are the way to go.
What you suggest is not DD-WRT supported afaik and to support new routers you need to buy 2 of them send 1 to Brainslayer so he ca add support and that will take a very very long time and initially will likely have issues.

DD-WRT or OpenWRT need to specifically support a device fully otherwise you may end up with a nice paper weight. Even then, sometimes bricks happen.
There can be devices that are not on supported list but are for instance rebrands of one that is, and if possible one can convert the device to the one that is supported and then install DD-WRT, however with your level of knowledge this isn't something Ide recommend to you, unless of course you can afford to learn by doing and investing both money and time.
