Are you saying that we should throw out boxes that have bugs in outdated firmware?
And never attempt to run dd-wrt on devices that have bugs in original firmware?
Or are you implying, that we should never ASK for help or otherwise post about issues for devices that don't conform to some unstated(or personal) requirement?
I am curious what the goal of dd-wrt is today regarding old boxes with bugs in the original firmware.
Im not implying any such thing (and Im quite sure your direction given your reply is born out of some frustration, its understandable but not productive.).
This is troubleshooting 101 (ANY project, its not a personal preference, it is an unwritten rule if anything), it's a valid expectation and an absolute must, to exclude all possible external causes (to a specific issue) in order to narrow down where the actual issue, so it can be fixed. Without getting there, can't narrow anything down and the bug, if any will remain. No one wants that.
Troubleshooting is what we are doing here, trying to exclude all other possible causes in order to narrow down the issue, this is a tried and tested proven methodical process to solve X to get to Y.
DD-WRT also is not responsible for the development all external libraries and components it uses, so if the issue is in such, we cant fix it. For that and in such cases the issue once identified must be reported against the correct project.
The age of the box is irrelevant, only the firmware version is relevant, we cant fix bugs in old firmware versions either but we must determne if a bug was introdccued we need a window between where it worked and wher it broke. So we ask to flash latest because if issue is there we have some already known that doesn't work, we can always work back from there.

And at this time, a serial log would help maybe to determine whats going on, so now you know, QoS setup creates the bootloop issue now we must by any means necessary to provide a clue.

It is good that you have it working the way you want as far as joker's comment let's move on
Yes, let's move on past the nuances there, indeed.

I actually kind of like that I don't have to scroll to the bottom of the page to click "save" now, it saves a lot of time.
