I'm trying to get a wrt-1900acs working as a repeater. Can anyone link me to a good tutorial?
I've tried searching google and here and all I seem to come up with is a lot of tutorials with outdated versions of dd-wrt.

For instance there is no "repeater" option for this router in dd-wrt and a lot of the tutorials just assume that's there. I thought it was just the atheros routers that didnt support the repeater option but it appears Marvel doesn't either?

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks.

Repeater is Broadcom only.

I presume you can use Client + VAP or WDS

Yup. Setting it up as a client or in client bridge mode is what I was trying to do. That's why I was looking for a step by step tutorial.
I followed one and got it visible to the roku TV I was trying to extend the signal for. I couldnt get it to connect though so I must be missing something.

Current releases are now "Station Bridge" mode. Still have to do some comparison with the current wikis, but @egc worked it out here:

No internet through Client Bridge

Configuring WNDR4500 As Wireless Bridge

Direct link to his write-up:

DDWRT Wireless Bridge.pdf

As far as the VAP goes, would need screenshots to see what might be askew since I'm sure the guest network wiki is probably also in need of some edits...

Not sure if this helps or is applicable. I have multiple routers running as WDS Stations. I've used this configuration for a few years now and am quite pleased with the performance. I run all my WDS out on 5Ghz and use the 2.4Ghz and LAN for the remote devices. In one case I am linking my barn at close to 500', so the 5Ghz is more than capable. I do not use any VAP's as it seriously degrades the performance. I have used repeaters but found I have much better performance and control with my WRT's. I would be more than pleased to help you if this setup works for you.

I'm not sure if it's applicable either but I'd be all for it if the performance is better and it's easier to set up.

My need is nowhere near as elaborate as what you have. I have a Netgear r7800 right now as my only router. What I'm trying to do is simply extend the 5ghz signal farther to reach a roku tv that's at the farthest end of the house from the router. The signal for both 5ghz and 2.4 reach now but it's slow on both which causes the tv to take a long time to connect to streaming channels.
Getting a better 5ghz signal to the outside for phones would be a plus.

Is using WDS as simple as setting the 5ghz channel on the netgear to use AP(WDS)? And how would I set the wrt 1900acs up?

WDS may not work reliable in your case as you have one router with Atheros chip and the other is Marvell.

You should also be aware that Multicast over wifi is a challenge of it's own. It's transmitted using the lowest speed.

On Atheros, you can set an option to transmit Mulitcast as Unicast over the wifi to use the full speed of the wifi.

As Per Yngve Berg indicated, WDS will not work with differing Chipsets. I have a couple of old Netgear's on my shelf and found that not only did the WDS not work when mixed with Marvell but I also had considerable problem even with Client Bridged mode. Don't get me wrong, I am definitely not criticizing Netgear as I believe it may be better than Marvell. My best suggestion for you would be to shelve the WRT and get a Netgear for your slave. I can't comment on whether the WDS or Client Bridged mode will work or how difficult it is to setup though. With the WRT's it is a non-event which is why I have stuck with them over the years and lived with all the headaches, WDS not being one of them. With my setup I have a TV LAN connected to my 3200 slave at the opposite side to the house to a a 3200 Master with a DSL 6/.4 WAN. I can stream through this but need to limit other devices due to the slow internet connection. I apologize for not being much help here.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I ended up using the links Kernel-panic sent. After reading egc's advice at those links where he calls using Station bridge a hack and he recommends running a wire, I decided to set it as an AP on the same network since I had a wired connection nearby anyway.

In the end, I didn't get any more speed using that then I do with the Netgear router alone though it did give a stronger 5ghz signal. I'm pretty sure it's just because the TV is old and has a poor NIC in it.

The TV has the ability to scan for all networks. That's how I was testing the wrt router to make sure it was broacasting the signals.
The TV picked up my original 2.4 and 5ghz signals from the Netgear and the two new ones I set up on the wrt-1900acs.

The TV also has it's own build-in speed test. It tested about the same 12-15mb/s on all 4. Newer phones and a tablet test much faster in the sme location so that's why I think it's just the device is old. TVs have come down so much in price, At some point i'll just replace that.

TVs also have facility to upgrade firmware, have you tried?

Personally I wouldn't plug any such device to the Internet, LAN/WLAN isolated from WAN sure, botnet magnets these are.

The firmware upgrades periodically but I've also run multiple checks. The TV is up to date.

Roku TVs are internet based so how else would I use it? They just connect to various streaming services, netflix, amazon, hulu, etc, etc. It even has a Plex app. I run a plex server on another computer and connect to it with the app.
