For what it is worth my wrt320 N works without problems running build 48810 mega (the one with K4.4).
It does have the upgraded CFE so that I have 64K NVRAM (so that it actually is an E2000, but the software used is the same)
It is normal that after you click Apply a lot of services and sometimes even the router restarts and as this is an old and slow router it can take a while before it comes back.
Furthermore Chromium based browsers do not always play nice with DDWRT although it is improving.
My wireless is within specs.
At least check your NVRAM if it is within 32K and consider upgrading your CFE so that it becomes an E2000
