General advice, reboot before trying a reset. Cold boot aka hard boot: power off, wait some time, power on.

I didn't mention it, but I did that before doing the reset. Power off, hope for a while that it works Wink, and then power on. Nothing, just the one power LED, no other activity. With 15 minutes to an online meeting, I took the approach that I expected to work, and it did.

I tried the 5/13 build again. SSH connect to have the router download. I watched the router this time during the reboot. From the flashing of the lights, it looked like the router rebooted normally (I got LEDs for my devices), but then rebooted a second time. During the second reboot, the router froze. No activity, no Ethernet connection, no WiFi. I cold booted it (twice), waiting about 30 seconds before powering back on. The boot activity looked normal, the Ethernet LEDs came on for my devices and then freeze.

Long press of the reset button gave me a clean boot. I tried making the setting changes that I use. I thought maybe the USB stick or IPv6 would be the issue, but they were not. I tried restoring my 5/6 settings backup into the 5/13 build (knowing that doing that is not a great idea), and the freeze on reboot came back.

Factory reset again, enabled SSH and used SSH to download and flash the 5/6 version. No issues, restored my settings, no issues.

Something in my settings does not get along with the 5/13 version on the R9000. I think I'll wait until the next release and if that acts up too, I'll take the time to reset and make my settings changes by hand. Sad

@MLandi things which *might* be relevant:

Is 2000 MHz not overclocking?
I know why does it work on one build and not on the other?

Furthermore the saved leases has given me troubles in the past

@GHz has been the speed of the router since BS gave us the option. Do you remember what trouble the saved leases gave you? I did try a reset on the 5/13 build without the USB stick and then enabled it. I did not try turning on saving leases after doing the reset. I'll keep that in mind if the next build gives me trouble.

MLandi by the name of the logic, if you do not find out and report what is causing the hand, waiting for the next build to be self resolved is a random shot…and it may be the same …
Try with basic working set up and save back up each step so you can come back easily and find on witch settings it will hang…

Router/Version: Linksys EA8500
Previous/Reset: Reset
Mode/Status: OpenVPN Client
Issues/Errors: none/stable

EA8500 running as OpenVPN client mode behind primary gateway router. Uptime 16 hours. Speeds are OK but they are never as fast as running NordVPN’s app for Linux on Mint which are essentially full ISP speeds. I can only assume making it the main GWR would yield slightly faster speeds but that’s not a option or necessary for us. That said speeds have actually increased over the years since the Kong build days. OpenVPN Speedtest are steady at 75/75 Mbps with 12ms pings over wifi so no complaints. https://www.speedtest.net/result/13157364474

Bonus I know there are other ad-blocks scripts & methods (and this is off topic) but I stumbled on this script and it seems to be working very well https://github.com/AnielShri/ddwrt-adblocker#startup-code

If you want faster VPN speed use WireGuard which is almost 3 times faster.

Not to hijack the tread but the OpenVPN protocol is fine for as much as we use it. I do know when I had PIA VPN a few years back they didn’t support it, maybe they do now I don’t know. So even if Nord and PIA support WG with dd-wrt now I think double-nat is a deal breaker, correct?

Speaking of WG I seen this one a few weeks about while watching other YT videos and I should have posted it then but wasn’t doing any dd-wrt stuff at that time, anyway better late than never. Listen for it at the 0:30 + minute mark, the YT poster gave you a shout-out. So yes nice work
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k6jS9A6MVo&t=30s

I switched from OpenVPN to WG in 2020 for remote access to my home network. I use a faithful Raspberry Pi 4 with Pihole as the WG server and it works great.

I took your advice and tried to start over. NVRAM ERASE, flash to 5/13, reboot. another NVRAM ERASE and reboot. Up came 5/13 so I started to enter my settings. When I got to the Wireless tab, I found a mess. Incomplete page and no buttons.

Now, I give up on 5/13. Something is not right with it on an R9000. Restored back to 5/6 and all is normal. Here is the page I got. This is the entire page, no header and no buttons, plus other oddities,

@MLandi

A thought... Did you redownload the update? I updated yesterday hoping to duplicate your experience, but all was fine.

Don't forget browser caching, press CTRL+F5 to clear it.
If you go from new builds to old or old to new, browser caches stuff depending on your browser setup and you must clear said caches to reload the CSS.

Ive noticed on rare occasions during normal navigation, sometimes the UI fails to load completely 90% of CSS (cache or not), but that goes away with a regular refresh F5, to be safe, always force clear cache with CTRL+F5.

I remembered and did clear the cache. I also tried Edge to see if it looked any different and it did not.
