So it’s been a while since posting but here goes. Running the EA8500 in Access Point mode only with current dd-wrt FW and recommended Wireless settings which had performed decent in the past. Here’s the issue the 2.4 GHz band download speed is well below what it should be getting. on average I’m only seeing 32/95 on two different laptops and even worse on my phone, so it’s the AP and not the clients.

The 5 GHz band is getting ISP full speed, that’s clocking-in around 308/340 which mirrors wired connection speedtest done on our LAN. I tried both Vanilla & dd-wrt which made no difference. I have 300/300 connection so at the very least the me thinks the 2.4 band speedtest should be 90/90

not sure what’s up with the ea8500, now I'm thinking its failing and on its way out I reset it three times and reconfigured. I went back as far as build r42872 and the 2.4 band D/L speed still sucks.

Just for comparison I pulled a DLink DIR868L out of my computer bone yard with build r42872. I reset and configured as AP only with basic WiFi settings and NO problem with the 2.4 band.

DIR868L 2.4 GHz

DIR868L 5GHz

Edit/Update

reset & upgraded DIR868L to current build and all is still good on both bands, so off to recycle land for the ea8500.

You didnt test to the same test server on speedtest.net

You did not check to see what channel both routers were using on the 2.4ghz band.

And why are you using 2.4ghz as your main? switch to 5ghz for as many of your devices as much as possible. 2.4ghz nowadays is more like a radio common with appliance devices like security cameras and wifi printers. or your older devices like a nintendo 3ds.

We have a couple older 2.4 devices. Good observation on the different speedtest severs but the test generally picks the best connection so in my case it’s NOT mission critical. Put it this way I could test all day long with ALL the nearest 8 -10 servers listed for our area and the 2.4 D/L speed is still in the toilet. Look at it this way, when the D/L speed is off by 50+ Mbps while the Upload is within range obviously there’s a problem.

I tried all the usual channels, auto and the “Best Wifi” settings under the announcement seciton. I figured before I trashed it I’d put the factory firmware on it just to see how it did and the result is the same. If I get motivated tomorrow I’m going to try OpenWRT but don’t expect that to be any better, more that likely it’s done. This thread will be likely written-off as defective hardware. The ea8500 had a good run but we live in disposable society and stuff breaks.

Just going from desktop to desktop across EA8500 using the Cudy AC USB WiFi Adapter
got the little bitty Cudy a while back from ---> 'Amazon'
It ain't no speed demon like some but it's a good'n and has never missed a beat yet...
...absolutely NO dropsouts & beats the hell outta that machine's builtin Intel WiFi

here is a lil test I just done --- I usually never have it on 2.4 but WTH ---> 'iperf3-test'

---
EDIT:
umm... yea, the iperf server is on my wired desktop Twisted Evil

I’ve been migrating to WiFi-6 so I upgraded to the Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210NGW Tri-band adapter on one laptop and my other laptop has the Wi-Fi 6 AX200. As you know both are backward compatible so no issue here with the ea8500 which I revived for a project.

I thought it would be a waste time but I installed OpenWRT on the ea8500 before I sidelined it and now the 2.4 band just did 104/117 with 9ms ping. Our ISP normally over provisions so the U/L is generally higher than the D/L. Go figure, the 2.4 band took a shit with dd-wrt and Linksys stock FW but now works with OpenWrt. Currently I have it double natted and going to configure in AP mode tomorrow and see if it continues to work. I try it like this for a few days then try rolling back to dd-wrt.

that's good to know Wink
No telling what its DD-WRT had a bit bungled but looks like its radios are still good.
I have NEVER seen an EA8500 just go bad for no good reason Cool

They will break when you do BAD things to one...same as any will.
I am down to just the one EA8500 cause of some really stupid things I did. NOT sure if I can ever repair the other but I haven't threw it in trash yet ...long story & not gonna get into that here Twisted Evil

I just posted the iperf3 test showing what it should do with current DD-WRT...& NO, I don't have any really fast WiFi---don't really have a use for it anyways Razz

glad your EA8500 seems ok ...prolly good to battle for several more years Cool

I reinstalled dd-wrt over the weekend and radios seem to be working again.

@ Mrjcd I purchased that adapter so unless I purchased a different Cudy adapter there no difference between that and the integrated adapter with windows. I’m not a Linux guru (or guru on anything else for that matter) and I couldn’t get the newly purchased Cudy to work with Linux Mint but no loss. I flipped the box over and Windows and Mac are supported, no mention of Linux Embarassed
