I have a 5GHz backhaul link between an r9000(WDSAP) and an r7800 WDS STA.

What i am noticing is my r9000 is happy to allow both the backhaul and external clients on 5ghz, but my wds sta -7800 is only using the 5GHz as backhaul and any connection to it seems to be on the 2.4 GHz band only.

I did not setup a VAP for the backhaul - is this why? it was noted as optional. If i need a VAP, do i need to create it on both sides or just the STA?

You need the VAP on the STA only.

Step 6: Log in to the WDS Station.

Step 10: (Optional) - To extend the wireless network of the WDS AP, or daisy chain WDS Station to WDS Station

Under Virtual Interfaces, Click Add
Change the Wireless Mode of the Virtual Interface to WDS AP
Type in the SSID for the Virtual Interface exactly (same capitalization) as it is on the WDS AP (main router)
