yep compare to building an X86/x64 router OS, Gargoyle will be the cheapest and easy going solution...
there is a beta 13 running around and its stable, so far so good..also could be done in DDWRT, but it will be sketchy...and as Wildlion said it requires skills and knowhow... Rolling Eyes

It sounds like the OP wants something more intense... I am a fan of pfsense... but I have built routers from scratch (ie normal hardware, customizing the OS, ...)

Two thumbs up for pfSense or OPNSense, unless you truly want to put the time or effort into a roll-your-own / self-customized OS install. Gargoyle is not a bad solution, but I am hesitant to run snapshot or 2-year-old "stable" firmware on an edge router - but every solution out there has it's caveats that must be mitigated.

True... and i never liked how gargoyle's default firewall settings are to reject packets and not drop them... so I always have to go in command line wise and manually reconfigure

I've never known iptables, ipchains, or ipfwadm to ever *not* have a default policy of DROP in INPUT, OUTPUT, or FORWARD rules.
