My 5 GHz band (80 MHz) has speedtest results at 200~250mbps.
However, my 2.4 GHz band (20 MHz) speedtest results are at 30~50mbps.
The router is below my desk and I'm trying this at my desk on my iPhone... 5 feet between the 2 devices.
Googling for possible solutions links to several articles all saying the same thing. They mention distance between the devices, channel, signal noise, etc. I'm not too certain how this would affect the speedtest results with the iPhone pretty much next to the router. The phone itself is clearly capable of at least 200mbps.... 30mbps at 2.4 seems ridiculous.

Depends on what the setup is and what rate is set at on your router.
I have the same router and the 2.4Mhz radio is set at 600 Mbit/s with NG-Mixed, but nowt all clients will support that, my slowest device on 2.4 band connects at TX 72M RX 72M and gets around 31.63Mbps
Install DD-WRT on your Asus RT-AC68U, and come back here if you still have the question
I tried and almost bricked the router. Took me several hours trying to restore it back to..err...Merlin. The only options I found were pointing to installing BrainSlayer then Kong, but Kong stopped development years ago, and whatever "recent" versions I was able to find from the last surviving guide, led to a failed...update.
Upon factory restore of the router... its default settings still would not give my iPhone speedtest results greater than 50 (@2.4GHz).
@the-joker: Since you own this router, if you could find the time to do a write-up for me, that would be super!
A couple of things common to most Asus routers is flashing via recovery method using firmware restoration utility / mini cfe webserver.
"Recent releases" is not specific and highly relative, and given the context, it seems these were old releases that may have been problematic, anyway. Current release is 47822.
@P A U L: Feel free to link whatever information you used to help me find it quicker so we can get this wiki in shape!
The best speed you can expect out of 2.4G on that router with dd-wrt configured as "NG-Mixed" is between 60-70Mbps at near range. If you move away from the router, the best you can expect with 2.4 is about 35-40Mbps, depending on your surroundings. With 5Ghz, I get near ISP speed. (only at close range)
BTW, r47822 seems to be a pretty stable build. I have updated all of my routers, but have not posted in the build thread - yet. _________________ ASUS RT-AC3100 AP Merlin 386.12_4

@kp, I could help out as well, as I have flashed the routers I have about 100 times with different firmwares ranging from dd, freshtomato, merlin, and stock Asus builds.
I'll have to take some time to get my thoughts together and then contribute to the Wiki.

Thank you for your efforts, any assistance is greatly appreciated.
It also mentions Merlin Firmware (https://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca). So seeing how that page listed year 2021 files I installed it thinking Merlin was DD-WRT by a different name/provider/developer.
After creating this thread here, I tried to figure out how I can get BrainSlayer and Kong onto my router instead. I started Googling around hoping the last known files are collecting dust attached to a forum post somewhere.
Back to the first link, under Good Additional Resources it mentions:
My router as-is, under Merlin, would not let me install BrainSlayer or Kong. So I used ASUS' Firmware Restoration tool to try and force it in. Bricked. However, with the Firmware Restoration tool I was able to restore it to Merlin...though it took several attempts and several hours.

The tweakedrom link is not a good one, at least not in that directory, as no image in there supports the RT-AC68* devices. Since all of the builds in that repo are antique, I wouldn't even bother with them. I have not seen this "jheide44" character on the forums since 2018, anyway, but apparently he rolls his own builds(?). His main page is outdated, to say the least. The alphaev7 link is outdated and contains outdated information regarding 'erase nvram', etc. Most 3rd party how-to's are not updated, whatsoever, and generally should be avoided. As noted above, we will work on fixing the official wiki. Thanks for the info, I may make note of it in some form at some point in the wiki. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

I would love an updated guide. Seems many people are successfully running dd-wrt on AC68U and I'm missing out. When I try to install the linked 47822 through my Merlin GUI, it won't let me. I'm afraid if I try and force it in through the Firmware Restoration tool I'm gonna end up soft bricking my router again.
