Hi all,
I have a R6300v2 in a remote location, running the last pre-SWCONFIG build (r46380) from 2021-04-17.

I am contemplating bringing it up-to-date to the current build. It doesn't have any VLAN or non-default switch configuration. But I know a lot had changed after the r46380 boundary when BS moved DD-WRT to SWCONFIG.

I cannot do NVRAM ERASE (or reset to factory) after the update, since that is in a remote location. May I have some advice on whether there is added risk of malfunction (or worse, bricking it) if I bring this up-to-date in a 'dirty' (no factory reset) state?

That's not the last pre-swconfig build. 46446 is:

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=328970

46604 is the first build with swconfig support:

https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Switched_Ports

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=329060

With it being remote and unable to hard reset, I would upgrade via ssh, if anything. Best bet is to go to said remote location and do it face-to-face.

Thanks for the clarification.

I would be doing it via SSH if I were to proceed. Unfortunately face-to-face is not an option -- the box is in a different country...

I just wonder if the introduction of swconfig would be a significant risk even for builds that is having all default switch settings.

I know some nvram and other variables have had some changes and such. I think @egc has upgraded without resetting without issue on a similar device. I haven't reset my R7000P without issue, either. I am going to be backing up my config and hard resetting soon to do specific testing, though.

Yeh - there're humans that can reach the power button (but none is tech-savy).

The worst I can afford to happen is if it somehow require a "Factory Reset" -- I had written a bunch of reset scripts and loaded on a USB stick on board of that R6300v2. It does require the box still somewhat functional (i.e. not bricked).

In that case, although it's a long shot, but I may be able to get a person to reset, logon Web GUI on a WIFI connection, enable USB and then execute my script.

If it were to 'brick' everyone at that location will lose internet access with no one to set it back up:(

I pulled the trigger and updated to the 10/20 build (r47528). The box rebooted fine and is online so far. I'll observe it in coming days and see how that goes.

Thanks everyone for chiming in for my (in)decision.
