Upgraded WRT1200AC v1's from r47720 to r47745 using Brave 1.10.97 (64-bit) running on Linux Mint 20.2 OS hardwired via Cat6.

Successful update and reboot. No reset, nothing disabled prior to update, uptime approx 24+ hrs, wired/wireless connected, vpn up immediately (Expressvpn). SFE, QoS and IPv6 are always disabled. OpenVPN client/DNSMasq and radios always enabled. I do not have any Apple devices. I do not use NAS.

Kernel Version Linux 4.9.291 #2943 SMP Sat Dec 4 05:07:33 +07 2021 armv7l

No issues with a routine update session.

Edit: Reverted to r47656 this morning due to Roku/FireTV devices failing to connect to wifi even though they show an "Excellent" connection. Last two or three releases seem to have issues with Roku/FireTV streaming devices for me. All other wifi devices connect as expected.

On r47656 release all devices connect without issue. Turn them on, instant connection and use. With the past few releases I have to reboot router and sometime unplug/replug Roku/FireTV streaming devices to get them to work. Staying on r47656 for now.

Well, maybe it's time to adjust your workarounds in wifi settings since the mac80211 driver got patched.

Hi,

Router Model: Linksys WRT3200ACM
File/Kernel: r47745[/i]
Previous/Reset: r39944 / 4 days ago.
Firmware Version: DD-WRT v3.0-r47745 std (12/04/21)
Kernel Version: Linux 4.9.291 #2943 SMP Sat Dec 4 05:07:33 +07 2021 armv7l
Client Devices: My client devices are a mixture of apple, windows, sonos, amaze (wired/wireless).

Issues/Errors:

1. Slow / Unresponsive / Hanging WebUI

Since upgrading the WegGUI is very slow, often completely unresponsive or have multi-minute long hangs.

I experience similar symptoms with different browsers: Safari, Chrome and Firefox. I have flushed caches and restarted a few times which can help for a few minutes before the WebGUI exhibits the same symptoms.

2. Wireless Daemons Repeatedly Dying/RestartingUI

Yesterday, I was curious what my client devices could support so I decided to change the Wireless -> Wireless Security -> Network Authentication settings on each of my 4 APs from just:

  • WPA2 Personal: Enabled

to also having:

  • WPA2 Personal with SHA256: Enabled
  • and also WPA 3 Personal / SAE: Enabled

This resulted in none of my client devices being able to connect at all to any of the 4 Wireless APs. (n.b. Wired connection is working fine and OpenVPN is working fine over wired).

I then disabled the extra two Network Authentication modes on each AP and saved &applied the settings and also restarted the router.

Since then I have continued to be unable to access any of the Wireless APs.

Looking at the /var/log/messages seems to show that the wlan0 and wlan1 daemons keep dying and restarting:

I have copies of /var/log/messages and dmesg available, if I can work out how to add them as attachments.

I appreciate this is not the location for support but thought I should provide an account of my experiences.

I'll probably try going to r44048 once I've managed to screenshot all the current settings so I can re-build the setup from a completely fresh state. That will take me a while with the Ui issues, so if anyone is interested in investigating what's going on I'll be happy to provide whatever diagnostics are appropriate. I've saved the dmesg & messages output for now.

Only possibility is it is related to Big Sur, but there are a couple of sysctl settings that should be changed to 0, if not already on the Administration -> Sysctl tab:
Code:
tcp_tw_recycle
tcp_tw_reuse

If that doesn't change the issue, then it is likely that you need to do a hard reset to get rid of nvram gremlins. Also, IRT your wifi issue, you should only choose a single authentication method and not multiple as this is known to cause problems. Falling back to 44048 is not relevant anymore.

Thank you very much for the tips.

Changing:

Administration -> Sysctl tab:
Code:
tcp_tw_recycle =0
tcp_tw_reuse = 0

appears to have improved the web ui performance. Very Happy Very Happy

And I disabled/enabled the WLAN radios for all APs and rebooted and was able to connect to one of the wireless APs but it was a short-lived connection.

Interestingly the log now reports different wlan issues:
Code:
Dec  9 00:14:53 DD-WRT daemon.info hostapd: wlan1.1: STA d2:9a:69:3c:7a:10 IEEE 802.11: disassociated due to inactivity

Dec  9 00:15:01 DD-WRT kern.err kernel: [  431.052886] ieee80211 phy1: timeout: 0x1111

I'll have a browse of the forums to see if there's similar reports but failing that I will certainly do as you suggest regarding gremlins and resetting. Now that I can access the WebUI more reliably, recording the existing settings will be faster so that is a more accessible solution that it was before.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Regards

Kt.

To reiterate, choose a WPA setting and use AES (CCMP-128) that *all* of your clients support. Using several at the same time will break wifi most likely...

I understand. I made the mistake once and then put them all back to how they were (i.e. as you recommended - back to WPA2 Personal with AES (CCMP-128)) but even though they are back to how they were the wifi is still not accessible.

I suspect I'll have to reset and setup from a clean install as you advised.

Thanks again.
