I cannot understand why you format the drive as NTFS. Use EXT4 instead.
What I dont understand is how the filesystem matters for Samba, NTFS is handled by ntfs-3g and its unrelated to Samba.
Ive read in similar threads that EXT2/EXT3 and now EXT4 are suggested as working. So is this then a samba issue or ntfs-3g issue?
I guess only logs would tell but there are no logs posted anywhere, and also there are no samba config files posted anywhere, so just describing the issues is not enough for anyone to see whats going wrong and where and why, in maybe trying to address any issues.
If by above paragraph isn't clear, TL;DR = Enable syslog/klog post (attach) syslogs/samba config files.
I also agree, this is in constant development, bugs happen and there is no warranty or responsibility assumed whatsoever for all the burnt houses/drowned kittens and killed babies in the process.
IF the files are important, keep backups and plug in directly to a machine.
This is why I have standalone file servers, it's a nice feature to have router side, but its nothing I would ever use in a router.
I'll just go back to my cup of coffee, no filesystem bugs there =)
logs I posted clearly shows 'EXT4-fs' which I have used for couple years or so.
AND
when I tried latest on the WNDR3700v4 I tried USB with FAT32 ...it also clearly showed 'FAT-fs'

/me re-alludes to ksmbd and wsdd2 not being 100% sync'd with upstream and not knowing which out of smbd or smbd-next is being used for ksmbd from the repo ...
@Per Yngve Berg not sure what your comment has to do with anything
the drive is an ext4 formatted drive, the issue isnt limited to ntfs
the reason it probably took so long for me to see is most files on this drive are static and just stored off. occassionally there is an update to one or two. they are not mission critical but thats also why my backup cycle is gapped.
