On a new install of DD-WRT, I want to create a guest WiFi network.
I am following the instructions here: https://www.alexlaird.com/2013/03/dd-wrt-guest-wireless/
It works up until I assign my Virtual AP, wl0.1 to a bridge, and give that bridge its own DHCP server and range.
Before that I can connect to the guest WiFi okay. Afterwards, the (very simple, all lowercase letters) WiFi password is no longer accepted. It seems crazy that these two things are somehow related.

Quote:

Interface br1 - Guest: IP 192.168.16.0/24

Does anyone know why changing the networking settings could make the WiFi password no longer work?

This was the first configuration change I tried to make after resetting the router and setting security for my default WiFi networks. (2 GHz and 5 Ghz)(those are working fine)
Thanks for any help.

I realize that those instructions are somewhat outdated. If anyone knows of a reliable, newer write-up on creating a guest network, that would be great.

I am a DD-WRT newbie. I had no problems doing the install.

RT-N66U or RT-AC66U?

3rd party how-tos, especially from 2013 may not be up-to-date.

And if the VAP is having an issue starting on boot, etc:

@HoverCar welcome at the forum.

Unfortunately you are posting in the wrong forum

The General Questions forum is not for asking router specific questions, see the second announcement in that forum: STOP!-READ FIRST: This area is NOT for router help! READ!

Also see the forum guidelines with helpful pointers about how to research your router, where and what firmware to download, where and how to post and many other helpful tips:

No problem as I will transfer this post to the appropriate forum. Smile

Yep, this is a well known and documented VAP issue on Broadcom chipsets.

It has nothing todo with password no longer works or changing wifi settings.

My guess is, you are clicking APPLY after saving the new settings or rebooted the router.

This is documented on the new build threads and should point you to the workaround thread, which I recently updated.

See https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=327063 top post and after finding the best commands for your router, save them as firewall as indicated.

Take care.

My router is the RT-AC66U, sorry for the typo.
That link is helpful, if not completely up-to-date. It does explicitly mention using the "Save Firewall" button.
With those instructions, my VAP/Guest network now has a separate IP range, and my WiFi password is accepted. However, it cannot reach the Internet. Oh, well. That should be an easier problem.

Disbelieve me if you like, but that was the symptom.

You are right, I was doing that. Today I learned to use the "Save Firewall" button.

Believe it or not, I did read the announcements & FAQs before posting. There is absolutely no way that I, a novice, could know that my symptom was a router-specific issue.
