Hello!

I recently spun up an old WRT54GSv7, mainly to be used as a 10/100 switch in a corner of the house. I installed the latest build of DD-WRT and performed an NVRAM reset, and now the interface looks like this:

I was able to get everything configured and working properly despite this limitation, but I really would like some more info about this.

For one, you're using IE, which may or may not work that well. A lot of the webUI fixes are geared specifically for Firefox and Chrome. Private browsing mode, clear cache, or use CTRL+F5.

I switched to IE to test for the screenshot since I heard there are issues with Chromium-based browsers, but I can confirm the issue occurs on both Chrome and Firefox as well. I've cleared cache with no luck.

And this was on 47644? You may want to test 47656, but I will let BrainSlayer and the-joker know.

https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/How_To_Flash_the_WRT54GS_v7

https://ftp.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2021/11-18-2021-r47656/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin

It seems that wiki doesn't specify the upgrading procedure, but if webUI flashing does not work, TFTP should.

To be certain, always use private browsing mode with no add-ons or extensions loaded. I prefer to use a portable browser like FF / FF ESR / Pale Moon portable versions.

Hello at @Aar

Im not entirely sure what that screenshot represents, yes the UI has had much rework and optimizations and even the inclusion of inspired themes which CSS will likely make IE crap its pants and die, should not and will not affect classic themes in the manner the screenshot depicts.

However it seems that screenshot is using elegant dark for its base, and it is very unlikely that screenshot represents even the IE terrible support for any CSS standards 10 years ago never mind existing supported CSS3 standards even if not fully in Firefox or Chromium based browsers around 1 to 2 years old should support even the inspired themes CSS.

My suggestion is to try what kp69 suggested, the browsers caches are not your friends here. That fails, idk what @kernel-panic69 may suggest, he has more experience in these older routers than I, so try to follow his advice. =)

You dont mention OS or version of browsers you have tested this against. But I would be interested in a modern browser version console output after clearing caches.

Will wait for reply.

Thanks for report and be well.

Issue solved.

OK so it turns out this device is 2MB flash 8MB ram

So a micro build.

The issue is that fresh.css was not included, and now it is.

All build post 47659 for such devices should be fully fixed, thanks to Brainslayer who included the file necessary for this to work.

See https://svn.dd-wrt.com/changeset/47657 and https://svn.dd-wrt.com/changeset/47658

However note you only have light styles available.

In future I have planned a complete optimization of the blue/yellow/red/orange/cyan/elegant light/dark styles

At this time each color has its own DUPLICATED CSS just with different colors
However it is possible to only use one lot of CSS and use CSS vars to switch the colors.

IF I do this, Internet explorer will crap itself 100%, it does not support CSS vars. And I'm not including fallbacks, I discourage/dont recommend the usage of IE for any dd-wrt operations.

The upside is you may be able to see light/dark styles on micro editions because the CSS will be 80% smaller.

If interested, look at how Inspired themes are implemented using this process. https://github.com/mirror/dd-wrt/tree/master/src/router/kromo/dd-wrt/ddwrt_inspired_themes

core.css has only CSS no colors whatsoever
all the other files have the :root {} CSS vars which are just essentially colors.

Same idea, with classic themes.

and lemme repeat this. IE is not recommended and is not compatible with CSS vars in that manner, and its not worth wasting bytes to support browsers like that anymore, there is no reason for ANY router firmware, to waste resources on these IE browser.

Thanks for reporting this.
And have a nice day.

Looked like a Javacript issue... I got similar screen when I disabled Javascript (via add-on) in Firefox 94. Try a newer browser?

And what version of Window$ are you using?

And this is why we do not recommend using a browser with add-ons. Some can have adverse effects.

Adding something to brainslayer said, the dd-wrt webif relies on and uses JavaScript.

How wise is it to disable JavaScript its up to users to decide.

Caveat emptor to those who do disable it.

have a good weekend all. Wink
