Also, I had to toggle Use JFFS2 for client lease DB off and then back on to get the dnsmasq.leases file to start updating on the USB drive.
Thanks BrainSlayer and team!
My R7800 is on build 47656, too.
I haven't used JFFS2 for a long while, but decided to try. Activated JFFS2 on the admin page and cleared the internal flash. Then activated keeping the leases on the USB JFFS stick. The dsnmasq.leases file was created allright, but nothing was written to it, not even after waiting over night. I tried it several times with reboot in between or just apply settings. Couldn't get it to work.
It has been like that for me for a long time, which is why I haven't been using it.
I have been keeping my LAN's reserved IP addresses file on the jffs partition for an equally long time, though.
EDIT:
It turned out that there was a problem with the JFFS partition on the thumbdrive.
On the Services/USB page under Disk Info the size of the JFFS partition was xxx/0. No space left as far as DD-WRT was concerned.
With the thumbdrive in a Linux laptop the JFFS partition didn't show up as full, but after I moved both partitions to the start of the drive and then reinserted it in the router, the size on the Services/USB page under Disk Info showed xxx/xxx as it should be.
Now dnsmasq.leases not just gets created on the JFFS partition, but also written to with the correct information.

Previous/Reset: 04-06-2017-r31825 (TFTP flash see notes) to r47618 to r47644 to r47656 / Yes
Mode/Status: Gateway (for test) / Operational
Issues/Errors: None so far
Preface
This router was damaged a long time ago, the motherboard had a hairline crack to one circuit (lucky the case was intact) which caused all sorts of issues...
Recently when testing a bug report it screwed my main router RT-AC68U config and had to reset it and manually reconfigure it, since the config backup when restored for some reason just didn't work and DHCP was not handing out the Gateway IP.
Since this main router is critical to provide WAN access to people working from home, I decided it was time to stop procrastinating the WZR-HP-G300NH repair.
Notes:
1) The WZR-HP-G300NH was a no-go for upgrades via WebIf for dozens of builds previous to r30826, it soft bricked every single time, but recovery via TFTP worked always, so I gave up trying upgrades via the WebIf and exclusively was using buffalo_to_ddwrt_webflash-MULTI.bin to upgrade via TFTP.
2) I TFTP'd recovery-upgrade to r47618 from r31825 since the later was ancient build.
3) Decided to test WebIf upgrade via HTTP only to r47644, this worked \o/, took almost 45 minutes for red light to stop flashing, but it worked, so did the WebIf upgrade r47656, Web upgrade uses wzr-hp-g300nh-dd-wrt-webupgrade-MULTI.bin (just as as reminder)
Reminder: It is VERY important during ANY TFTP recovery procedures that You DISABLE (or allow the TFTP client through) the Windows Firewall, TFTP Server router side listens for 4 seconds only.
Be patient: The slower the router the longer it may take to flash, and this sometimes fails.
If all fails TFTP recovery is your friend. I hate repetitive tasks so for anything recovery related no matter the machine/device I write scripts Linux/Windows side.
CLICK HERE for a batch script I wrote to automate some some repetitive processes, like the adding arp entries, Waiting 10 seconds at the same time I plug in power to the router before running tftp put and arp cleanup before exiting, it has all the instructions on HOW inside which I added for the benefit of whoever needs it. The gist containing the script inks a 3rd party Linux side recovery process.
And so here is a success story with something out of the Cretaceous period.
