Hi!

Does anybody have hardware information for USR8003? I cannot find any info from US Robotics and there is no installation guide specific to that model.

My gut feeling so far is that that thing probably has <=1MB of flash so there is no hope getting the micro build on it. I will not attempt a custom build of this or OpenWrt. I just wanted to be 100% sure of this before I let this thing wander the earth and scatter about with no purpose. I searched Google, US Robotics websites, techinfodepot without success.

PS: https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Known_incompatible_devices could be updated with this info but I cannot create an account.

If it is anything like the 8004, then it only has 1MB flash, so not compatible. I will update the wiki later.

I believe USR8054 suffers from an identical shortcoming. Belongs thus to the incompatibility list. See for instance https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=72129&highlight=1MB

Indeed it does: https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/USRobotics_USR8054

Unfortunately, USRobotics doesn't have a GPL code tarball of any sort for any of these:

https://support.usr.com/support/s-gpl-code.asp

Pity, since it would be interesting to see if there was a way to patch the stock firmware enough to make any of these old things viable for anything without worry. Last firmware releases were over 15 years ago.

If their firmware for any given target is based on GPL like kernels etc that are distributed as a binary (say they publish fw updates) and likely is, they have to have it and make it available at request, now, if they would put you through some Kafkaesque process to get the GPL code or NDA, its another matter all together. But for such old machine, best thing is to ask, they may just give it away, with a brand new Mercedes.

There is always the lovely people at https://sfconservancy.org which you most likely already know about.

Be well people.

The GPL tarball or zip file should already be on their site, since these are in the same era as the original WRT54* series Linksys devices. It didn't need to be individually requested, vendors were supposed to provide it without such nonsense, hence the case and litigation AFAIK. Of course, vendors decided to get sneaky and eventually stopped providing the actual code for some of the included binaries (like rc, the router init), probably claiming that it wasn't licensed under GPL. Broadcom has always had certain bits and pieces provided as pre-compiled binary object files and difficult to work with. But anyway, at around 1MB flash for these devices, I can only imagine just how stripped-down everything is to begin with and how difficult it would be to roll a micro build that would fit.
