I'm interested in installing a second AP device via a wired GigE backhaul to my main Netgear R9000, and utilize fast transition (802.11r) hand-off. I am trying to keep DD-WRT on my main router, and am not keen on moving to a closed Orbi or Google Nest mesh system.

A few questions:
1) Is this worth setting up? I read that only cell phones support 802.11r handoffs, but I am looking to improve the WiFi behavior on PCs & tablets, too, as people move through the house.

2) I see 802.11r as an option in the R9000 UI, but I see in the wiki that it isn't supported: " DD-WRT does not currently support 802.11r FT but there is support for it in OpenWRT" (from: https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_access_point)

3) Assuming 802.11r is supported in later firmware versions, are there any specific AP devices (looking for a ceiling mount option) that support DD-WRT & 802.11r?

I'm currently looking at the Netgear WAC540 & Netgear WAX218 Access Points.

Thanks for your input.
