Hello,

I would be grateful for help with setting up an extended wireless network using two D-Link DIR-615 routers that both have DD-WRT (Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r42872 std (04/10/20)) installed. I've had help from folks on these forums in past, with getting DD-WRT installed on my routers, for which I'm very grateful).

BACKGROUND:

- I live in a very rural location, in a cottage that has very thick solid stone walls, (up to 4ft thick) and;

- my internet provider (a local company specialising in providing fast internet via line of sight wireless connections) does not allow access to their required router, for "security reasons".

MY SETUP

The set up I’m using is to take the incoming internet connection from the ISP’s required router, into the house electrical wiring, using LAN plug adapters, and distributing the internet signal to two DD-WRT routers on either side of a very thick central wall - please attached diagram.

WHAT I’M TRYING TO ACHIEVE

I would like to have one wireless network with one DHCP server on it, using two DD-WRT routers, so that all devices are accessible on the same wireless network.

MY QUESTIONS

I have two questions:

- how do I deal with the DHCP side of things keeping in mind that the initial router, that is controlled by my ISP has an active DHPC server on it (I don’t have access to this router). I would like to be able to set up one of my DD-WRT routers as my network DHCP server as I would like to be able to allocate static IPs (for example, for the wired LAN printer server and internet-capable TV – please attached diagram) and tweak different things?

- how do a create a single wireless network (a single SSID and password) using two DD-WRT routers in the configuration set out in the attached diagram?

Any help with this – pointing me to helpful resources would be great – is very much appreciated.

Thanks

P.S. I hope this post is in the right place. If not, apologies!

Set the first (more powerful)router to a normal gateway mode with DHCP and DNS on its own subnet, different from your ISP router...than connect the second DDWRT router to it via either LAN cable or use power-line adapters(PA) and put it in WAP mode https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Access_Point

I seem to have got things working for my needs - thank you for the help.

I have attached a very crude diagram indicating that I had to use four power line adapters in two pairs (as implied in your post Alozaros? - but not made explicit). One pair (encryption synced) to take the internet signal from the ISP's router to the WAN port on my primary router (router 1 with an active DHCP server running). I used a second pair of power line adapters (encryption synced) to take the internet signal from one of the LAN ports on my primary router to a LAN port on my secondary router (router 2 with DCHP switched off).

I tried a few different configurations and this seemed to be the one that works. Not sure if this is the most elegant way to do it. I wasn't even sure if you could run two different pairs of power line adapter connections over the electrical wiring! Any comments are very welcome.

Thanks again...

I presume the PAs does not support VLAN.

No other way to do it without VLAN support.
