Hello
Please forgive my lack of knowledge with this, but i'm wondering if anyone can help.
I am in the UK and have a Netgear R7000 with dd-wrt installed on it and use it with a VPN.
The R7000 is plugged in to my ISP router (Sky).
I wish to be able to remotely access the router settings on the R7000 to update the VPN settings from time to time if I am not at home.
I followed some instructions on setting up the SSH/Putty/Firefox and can get Putty to connect and the router admin page to display in Firefox when I am connected to my 'home' Wifi from the Sky router.
If I go to a friends house and try and connect from there, Putty does not connect and just times out.
I have allowed port forwarding on the Sky router for the port I have used.
Any advice or words of wisdom would be gratefully received. Happy to provide further details if it would help.
Assuming you have a public IP and port forwarding is set up correctly, on dd-wrt: Administration->Management->Remote Access->SSH Management

First of all enabling remote access will attract attention.
To connect from the internet a VPN is safer.
If you want to do it at least use good keys (like you are doing )
If you use a VPN client you cannot use the WAN to connect to your router as traffic goes in via the WAN but then goes out via the VPN and the Firewall will block this.
In that case use Policy Based Routing see the Policy Based routing guide links in my signature at the bottom.
P.S. always state not only router model but also build number.
