To get the best out of DDWRT and the forum read the forum guidelines with helpful pointers:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=324087

If you have not already read the forum guidelines, please do !!

You are posting in the wrong forum (the general questions forum is not for router specific questions) see the forum guidelines!

I will transfer this thread to the appropriate forum for you Smile

However I am not very optimistic, I think this is a 4 MB flash router and it could well be that there is no VPN version for this router

With 4 MB flash I think you are out of luck. Cannot find a TL-WR940N v1 folder, however...

Supported devices "Special Features Notes" it is WR941NDv4 without detachable antennas.

Your router is not officially supported. Flashing an image for another device is completely at your own risk. 4MB flash Atheros devices will not have any kind of OpenVPN or Wireguard VPN included, if I am not mistaken. I have a TL-WR940Nv3, which is officially supported, and does not have anything you seek. All you will have is PPTP which is considered insecure and deprecated.

The other thing to be aware of is VPN throughput. Using a VPN on any router is taxing on the CPU. A single-core CPU ~750MHz will only handle about ~30MB/s through a VPN. A router with a CPU under that is probably not even worth it.

This has been proven using TP-Link Archer C7, for example. That router does have support for OpenVPN and WireGuard (not sure about WireGuard).

In order to get ~100MB/s throughput through a VPN you need a dual-core router like a Netgear R7800 (dual-core, 1.4GHz).

Also, with a recommended router you can run the newest firmware builds without thinking or any hesitation.

small correction single core CPU @720-750Mghz VPN max speed is 10Mbit...running chachapoly or even the lowest encryption 128GCM...

4MB flash size routers do not have VPN, as well some other useful services...
Those are only for a basic needs...!
