I was wondering.

Why are threads for previous builds left open? Would it not be a good idea to close it? or is there a point to leaving them open.

And remember, The keyword here is "wondering"

People use older builds for whatever reasons, Marvell relies on r44048 for example, good to keep record.

Sometimes long-standing bugs are found. Also, sometimes people compare older build behavior to latest.

Imagine the time wasted locking thousands of threads, and possible human mistakes during this process.

You make it sound like I am talking about deleting a forum thread out of existence.

I am talking about preventing further posts from being made to it so it's "read-only". And I assume that by doing this, there is a better focus on newer builds rather than going backward.

No, I did not "make it sound" like anything. This thread is pointless and should be deleted from existence.

To clarify, I am talking about leaving open a build thread that is about, say, a few months to a year old. Or better yet, about 1 to 2 years old.

And then someone replies to it.

What is the point in leaving it open if it's really old?

Sometimes a post belongs in a thread. Sometimes it does not. These are all decided one case at a time.

People are going to do what they do. Lock a thread and a new one appears. This is all so very pointless.

So to clarify, if the old thread for past build was closed, someone will make another thread based on that build. Then it makes sense to leave the old thread build open. I am understanding this now.

1. its not pointless. You just answered my question.

Someone posts new topic or thread in the wrong location it can be moved to the correct subforum.

A new post into the wrong thread can be easily split off into a brand new topic for their discussion.

However, for new topics or posts that belong in another thread a merging is difficult or impossible.

The only time we close or lock a build thread is if it is removed from the download server or sometimes if it's a bad build that will brick devices, etc. Outside of that, we don't close or lock them. There has been only one exception this year to that, and only because I wasn't sure if I should lock the threads for r46949 and open all new threads for r46935. IRT merging posts to another thread, I know moderator access cannot do it, and I cannot for the life of me remember if on phpBB 2.x administrator access has the ability to. I do know that the search index for this forum needs to be wiped and rebuilt due to database size and other things.
