I've got and installed v3.0-46385 for my Netgear 6400v2.

CPU - Broadcom BCM4708A0 2 cores, 1 Ghz
Flash - 128
RAM - 256

4 GigE LAN + 1 GigE WAN

Reset factory values, set user and password, and set WAN as "Static IP" in the range of my ISP's router LAN. All other things are default set.

Using wired for testing.

Connected WAN port to one ISPs router LAN port, connected my computer to one of the LAN ports of the Netgear 6400v2.

I can connect but I got almost half the speed than if I was connected directly to the ISP router, when speed testing using ISP's test or Oakland one.

Download and upload: from 950Mbps to 390Mbps more or less.

Is this ok? What I'm doing wrong? Is it for the double NATing?

EDIT: ping is 5ms without Netgear and 6ms when Netgear is present.

EDIT2: swconfig dev switch 0 show - port 1-5 in pvid=1 are showing "link:up speed:1000baseT full-duplex"

That is the normal LAN<>WAN speed for these little routers.

If you want near gig speed you need a better router like a Netgear R7800.

You can eke some more speed out of it by enabling CTF&FA (on setup page) with this enabled my R6400 v2 does about 750 Mb- 800 Mb/s YMMV

Note it is not compatible with PPPoE or Static DHCP and also not with Qos (it is a new feature we still have to learn a lot about it)

For using CTF&FA you have to use a recent build e.g. 46885 or better

To get the best out of DDWRT and the forum read the forum guidelines with helpful pointers:

Ok, Im using build 46885, tried CTF&FA, setting WAN to "Automatic DHCP" and "Static IP".

It makes almost no difference to me Shocked

A workmate has same ISP, same ISP router, and using a Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300H (Atheros device AR7161, 680Mhz) with same DMZ setup, is getting almost full speed. What could it be happening? And he is using a 2020 dd-wrt version.

It only works when using Automatic DHCP and you have to reboot once or twice.

Your friend is probably not using NAT and has setup as a WAP:
https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_access_point

If you want gig speed WAN<>LAN and perform NAT you need a faster router, but like I said about 750 - 800 should possible with CTF&FA enabled (of course measured wired)

Well, just VPNd at his place (through his DD-WRT). Checked his conf and is a Static IP WAN, NAT.

Accessed his Raspberry Pi 4 and issued a 'speedtest' at the CLI
Code:
root@DietPi:~# speedtest

   Speedtest by Ookla

     Server: Digimobil - Madrid (id = 17773)
        ISP: DIGI SPAIN RESIDENTIAL
Latency:     6.17 ms   (0.06 ms jitter)
Download:   913.28 Mbps (data used: 775.0 MB)
Upload:   895.84 Mbps (data used: 1.6 GB)

Then a traceroute to www.google.es

Code:
 1  DD-WRT (192.168.99.1)  0.342 ms  0.192 ms  0.286 ms
 2  192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1)  0.777 ms  0.686 ms  0.672 ms
 3  10.0.0.1 (10.0.0.1)  2.616 ms  2.457 ms  2.332 ms
 4  172.16.6.225 (172.16.6.225)  3.084 ms  3.099 ms  3.071 ms
 5  10.220.97.111 (10.220.97.111)  2.385 ms  2.546 ms  2.506 ms
 6  10.220.96.30 (10.220.96.30)  7.101 ms  7.695 ms  7.599 ms
 7  91.232.81.211 (91.232.81.211)  7.480 ms  7.368 ms  7.273 ms
 8  * * *
 9  74.125.253.200 (74.125.253.200)  6.320 ms  6.266 ms 142.251.54.150 (142.251.54.150)  8.368 ms
10  142.251.51.143 (142.251.51.143)  6.696 ms 142.251.51.141 (142.251.51.141)  6.679 ms 74.125.242.179 (74.125.242.179)  6.864 ms
11  74.125.37.216 (74.125.37.216)  7.046 ms mad41s14-in-f3.1e100.net (142.250.200.131)  6.714 ms 74.125.37.216 (74.125.37.216)  7.316 ms

You can see there the DD-WRT Buffalo, 192.168.99.0 network and the ISP router LAN 192.168.1.0.

So, it is configured as a router, making NAT, and he is getting almost full speed.

No tricks, no special settings. And I think his router is "weaker" than mine, isnt it?

How can it be?

EDIT: activating CTF&FA and rebooting 3 times makes my router download speed slower (upload speed is like before) and uses much more cpu. Tomorrow I will try last version, and maybe I will try to get back to the same version than my mate just to check how it goes.

Then I would just buy his router if it gets those speeds Smile

@kinu
you didn't specify what model the buffalo router is.

Also, can you tell us exactly why you are using dd-wrt?

Yes, I did.

Of course: using openvpn client for my old NAS, and for some computers when doing certain things, using ssh tunnel for accessing home for years (as a proxy from work, to access devices...), and setting up a wireguard server in the router recently. I'm using dd-wrt for years, and I get accustomed to set all the things in it. I like the fact it is unix so I can ssh and use command line to do and see how and if things are working.....

I did set up certain wireless confs in the past, and used QoS when the stock firmware in my routers does not allow it, etc.

I don't know if Netgear stock firmware can do all or part of these things. Anyway I prefer to do them in dd-wrt, even if I loose some speed. But not the half of it.

Now for this testing all these services are not set up. I only activated the ssh daemon to access router CLI.

Only thing I can think of is doing a thorough erase from CLI (telnet/Putty) with:
nvram erase && reboot

Put settings in manually, never restore from a backup (to a different build that is)

But perhaps you have done so already

@kinu

I am not tired, you're tired! (1:24am here)

anyway, maybe buy a qualcomm router then? broadcom bad, qualcomm good?

I mean running all those things and getting gigabit internet, might be better off with a hgiher end router.

I totally agree with @Gameman Advanced Kid

If you want a better router buy the likes of a NetGear R7800 Qualcomm/Atheros Dual core Arm A15 equivalent at 1725 MHz or NetGear R9000 Smile

That said I just did a quick iperf test from workstation on the LAN to workstation on the WAN side

Router R6400v1 build 46971M , nvram erase && reboot, after enabling CTF extra reboot, all else default but radio's off

After reset so with SFE is on: slightly over 500 Mb/s

On setup page:
Code:

Shortcut forwarding Engine: CTF
Flow Acceleration:              CTF&FA

But CTF&FA only works under some special circumstances there is a wiki about it but that is still a WIP:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Hardware#Flow_Acceleration.2C_SFE_and_Cut-Through_Forwarding

My main router, an R7800, has near gig speeds without any acceleration Smile

Well I am done Smile

P.S. internet speed testing is highly unreliable

I downgraded to r45219 with reset, didn't change anything, reboot two times to let it relax Smile and now I'm getting around 750-800 Mbs up and down. And cpu is not over 30% while speed testing.

So something is not working like it should in the latests releases. What do you think? Could I help to diagnose it?

I'm testing like crazy, upgrading and downgrading and there is something strange in the latest versions for this router that makes the speed go down.

A thing that is driving me crazy is my friend's speeds. Why is he having those great results?

I cannot comment on throughput of a router I did not personally test.

I would not expect a single core MIPS32 24K at 680 Mhz can do giga bit speeds although with SFE on who knows?

As said speed testing with internet speed tests is highly unreliable Smile

Using iperf is more accurate

Attached the build I am using for Netgear R6400.

This is an experimental build so do not use it unless you know how to debrick your router (tftp/serial)

Reset before uploading and after uploading.

Warning: experimental builds can (permanently) brick your router
