Hello DD-WRT Family,

I owe Asus RT-AC88U. I would like to add another router in my home that will have separate wifi so the new network would be strictly focused on privacy. I would like to set up wireguard on the New one. Actually I've never used DDWRT yet so please advice me best router to buy.

My ISP is cable so the internet only works on router with certain MAC address. So I would need a router that allows that.

My questions in short:
1. What router to buy for Wireguard+DDWRT+MAC Clone
2. How to connect the routers together so the internet will go from the RT-AC88U to the New one with MAC cloned (and does it compromise safety)
3. What DNS servers should I use for safety?
4. Can the two routers interfere if they will be close to eachother?
5. Does DDWRT automaticly update?
6.How is it different from Merlin and OpenWRT?

I know the questions are mixed and very basic at some point but the topic itself is complex. Im a noob in Networking but I have some IT/technical background in general

thank you,
C

1. Netgear R7800 or R9000. My ISP is cable, no MAC clone, only power cycle modem and reconnect WAN.

2. Maybe use the new router as primary, then repurpose AC88U to isolate IoT devices from your network.

3. Many different ways to implement DNS, and people will have different opinions about the best solutions.

4. Yes, keep them physically separated by at least a meter and use different channels that do not overlap.

5. Updates are manual from web interface, or use command line, and see build threads for user feedback.

Thank you blkt for quick answer and claryfing few things. Do you have any alternative to these routers? As they are hardly avaliable in my country. What about Asus RT-AX89X (it's expensive but maybe worth it ... )

TP-Link Archer AX11000

But I have no Idea how they work with DDWRT

6. Far different projects and uses.. ASUS models I recommend keep using modified stock firmware Merlin.

Netgear R7500v2 or Linksys EA8500 these are usually not much cheaper, likely EA8500 needs serial flash.

Maybe TP-Link Archer A7 v5 or C7 v5, but at this point likely paying too much for too little hardware spec.

AX routers are not supported.

If R7800 is not available, XR500 may be. It's a rebrand of the same router.

Thank you. There is better availability for this one. Thought XR700 might be much better?

XR700 is a rebrand of R9000. Sorry, forgot to mention these.
