Since there is an option to switch between Vanilla and DD-WRT firmware for both 2.4GHz & 5GHz, I think it would be helpful to know what the differences are between them and under what circumstances one might be better than the other.

For example, it seems somewhat common for users here to use Vanilla for 2.4GHz and DD-WRT for 5GHz. Why is that? I have no idea and haven't been able to find this information.

Is there a summary of what the differences are and when to use one vs the other, or is it simply trial-and-error for everybody?

Thanks!

this is the firmware for the WLAN chipset, the software that runs on the WLAN "card".

Vanilla is the original QCOM firmware from Kvalo and DD-WRT is the DD-WRT custom firmware, a modified firmware based on older code.
And as far as I understood correctly DD-WRT exchanges patches with candelatech (similar bugs etc).

CT / candelatech is also an alternative firmware

Half (10 MHz), Quarter (5 MHz) and auto ACK Timing are some of the additional features in DD-WRT firmware.

Use mixed Wireless Mode and disable TurboQAM (QAM256) to avoid possible issues; last I checked was March.

Otherwise, use Vanilla only. Have no idea why people try half and half; they should stick to coffee & ice cream.

Watch out for problems with slow thoughput with the dd-wrt driver if you have N clients. Vanilla works fine.
