I have noticed following RAM usage on TP 1043 routers (under similar loads):

1) ver.1.8 - around 16mb (out of 32)
2) ver.2.1 - around 34mb (out of 64)

Therefore, it appears that ver.1.8 may have use higher amount of RAM (if available). And maybe higher RAM module will improve the work of the device, expecially after recent wi-fi problems on beta firmware 45955.

So, I plan to upgrade RAM chip on ver.1.8 from 32 mb to 64 mb. Such type of chips may be found in some computer RAM memory modules.

Are there any ideas or comments over "wokrability" of such idea?

not worth it...
as well you may need a specific firmware build, tailored
for the new ram size...and there you will get into the stones...do in mind this router is a 'real antique' and has a week CPU and its performance will not wroth all the hassle...unless you want to practice your hobby Razz

'need a specific firmware build, tailored‘?

Are you sure?

In most cases for Atheros, mod from 32 to 64mb has no problem at all,if the RAM soldered well, even the stock firmware boots fine and recognizes all the RAM space of 64mb.

here are the RAM mod for V1.x from 32mb to 64mb.
Just find the right model of RAM,replace and shall boot fine.

Thank you for the information, as soon as I'll have any updates. I'll post them here.

Initially I hope to use DD-WRT software on updated hardware...

eeff11 yep ive seen few updated 32 to 64 RAM routers and was thinking to mod my own in the past...
than i scaled the situation, with getting an appropriate better unit, with DDWRT support and enjoyed life...
in general i do support the idea of second life, sadly 1043 v1xx is not the best unit abound, for nowadays router performance, consider his brother 1043v2 witch is a rock solid and still serves well...but still lacks on CPU performance...

This upgrade is fine even on stock firmware, I just did it with a dir 615 and tp link 1043 its got similar setup no issues at all, soldering is the tricky part I have found you may need to verify the contacts a few times this is a lead free PCB and the contacts need to be perfect.

I did ram mod 3 times on different 1043 v1
For me it totally worth it, 32mb is not enough for torrents + openVPN client. 32 mb = hang on heavy load. 64mb = rock solid.
I used DDR 32Mx16 64MB elpida d5116afta-5b-e, found it on 512MB DDR DIMM PC memory module. Tip. Search for 512MB module with 4 memory chip on each side. They are 32Mx16 (64MB).
