I bought the Netgear R7000 after reading a few recommendation threads.
The last DD-WRT device I played with dd-wrt with was the Linksys WRT54G (which was pure bliss at the time).
My experience with the Netgear has been night and day with the Linksys on DD-WRT.

The worst and most time consuming part of the process is getting a working/stable enough copy of DD-WRT onto the device to then attempt to configure.
After you have followed the official R7000 dd-wrt guide the following needs to be done every iteration:
Quote:

1) Factory Reset With Red Button On back of router.
2) Flash netgear-r7000-webflash.bin (via web gui update firmware http://192.168.1.1)
Go into management and enable telnet on port 23 (default port)
Open up CMD and enter the following:
telnet 192.168.1.1
erase nvram
reboot

After those additional steps perhaps 1 out of 3 times you are actually able to set your web username and password.
If your web username and password change persists correctly (probably a 80% probability of working), then you can attempt
to configure your router. Depending on what management page you access or setting you set it may once may require to start at the beginning with the factory reset.
There is also the possibility you really screw things up in which case you can follow this set of steps:

Quote:

telnet in 192.168.1.1

wget http://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2021/01-28-2021-r45592/netgear-r7000/netgear-r7000-webflash.bin
write netgear-r7000-webflash.bin linux
nvram unset http_passwd
nvram unset http_username
nvram commit

After around 7 hours of iterating over this, I finally got my repeater bridge setup and working.
I very quickly exited the web console, in fear of it soft bricking itself again.
Fast forward 5 months and out of nowhere it soft bricked itself again.
I spent another 5 hours tonight going through these same steps, and just said screw it.
I'm done

When it soft bricks itself it has multiple different malfunctions (in some cases some symptoms are present and others aren't).
- Absolutely no access to the web console (in extreme cases even telnet I believe telnet wasn't working)
- Configurations that were working no longer work. IE. The lan connections on the repeater bridge would work but wifi not, and the web ui not.

The worst part is when it enters this soft bricking, there is no way to access the logs typically as you are locked out of all management telnet/web console. So you are forced to re-run the above instructions... Factory reset, nvram reset, reflash firmware, etc etc etc.

Has anyone else had these types of experiences with their R7000?
I'm trying out advanced tomato at the moment and it is running smooth, but it doesn't have something as well fit as the repeater bridge on dd-wrt for my situation.

Hi Warfront1,

I just installed DD-WRT on a brand new Netgear R7000, and I did not have any issues at all.

I looked up the Netgear R7000 in the DD-RT router database.
https://dd-wrt.com/support/router-database/?model=R7000_v1

I downloaded the factory-to-dd-wrt.chk as the recommended file to flash to DD-WRT from the factory image. I performed the upgrade from the administration menu (after you upload the file, you may see prompts that indicate that the file is invalid, or something similar, it should be safe to click through them).

If all goes well, after the upgrade completes and the unit finishes rebooting, (and this takes an exceptionally long amount of time with the Netgear R7000), once the unit starts to respond to ping again you should get the default login screen to enter a username/password. At this point, you will have a fully functioning DD-WRT installation.

I hope that this helps!

Current release for the R7000 as of this post:

https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2021/05-09-2021-r46604/netgear-r7000/

1) Do not use the router database or old information, this firmware is in constant development.

2) Please consider upgrading.

3) Please read the entire forum rules and guidelines in my signature.
