Hello!

I am currently working on my Linksys E3200.
As far as I realized this should be a boradcom router, so I hope I am right at this place.

Currently I am working on Firmware:
Quote:
DD-WRT v3.0-r46239 mega (04/01/21)

My basic idea was originally to use "curl" to update the DNS-name that is part of my new domain (first time working with domains and as far as I could find out, Hetzner is not providing an update-link that I could use in the "Setup" -> "DDNS" page).
So far so good. I found many instructions for that, but it all starts with the installation of entware.

So far so good, after googling my way through here (and many differen pages) you find me now here without any further ideas as I am ending in errors each time.

What I did so far:
Quote:
0.) Configured a USB-Stick to be used as Diskspace in the /opt directory (so there will be for sure enough space available)
1.) update the firmware (to the version mentioned above)
2.) tried different entware versions, though the "mipsel" should be the correct one as far as I read
3.) googling differen pages for hours without hope

The following is happening:
As described on:
Quote:
https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installing_Entware

I am executing these steps:
Quote:
cd /opt (click enter)
wget http://bin.entware.net/mipselsf-k3.4/installer/generic.sh (click enter)
sh generic.sh (click enter)

The download works fine. Meanwhile (due to the firmware update) I can also properly execute the generic.sh script.
In the course of the installation it looks like this:

Quote:
root@MyRouter:/opt# sh generic.sh
Info: Checking for prerequisites and creating folders...
Warning: Folder /opt exists!
Info: Opkg package manager deployment...
Connecting to bin.entware.net (104.21.91.83:80)
saving to '/opt/bin/opkg'
'/opt/bin/opkg' saved
Connecting to bin.entware.net (172.67.212.134:80)
saving to '/opt/etc/opkg.conf'
'/opt/etc/opkg.conf' saved
Info: Basic packages installation...
Segmentation fault
Segmentation fault
Info: Congratulations!
Info: If there are no errors above then Entware was successfully initialized.
Info: Add /opt/bin & /opt/sbin to $PATH variable
Info: Add "/opt/etc/init.d/rc.unslung start" to startup script for Entware services to start
Info: Found a Bug? Please report at https://github.com/Entware/Entware/issues

... and I am completely out of (googling) ideas of how to fix this "segmentation fault" issue with the opkg and would kindly ask for help at this point!

Thanks in advance!

PS: I found also an instruction to get the entware from github... unfortunately I did not find a way to get git running on the router and at this point I am quite sure, that it might not be inteded to tbe used on a router anyways.

It seams you followed the install process, as it should...
Things that i would ve try:
-erase that USB and create an ext2 or ext3 partition (not NTFS) and name it OPT...use Automount option from GUI usb section or directly add UUID where opt mount is...

-check that USB for errors and bad sectors...

-try the very last build 46446

I think the E3200 is now using Kernel 4.4 (uname -r).

it is possible Entware is not compatible with this?

Ah, something I forgot to mention.
The USB-Device is currently FAT32 (as I would never use NTFS for something that is not meant for windows devices).
I also formatted it properly yesterday and the system recognizes the full capacity without any troubles.

Configurations I did for USB:
Quote:
1.) Core USB Support <Enable>
2.) USB Printer Support <Disable>
3.) USB Storage Support <Enable>
4.) Automatic Drive Mount <Enable>
5.) Run-on-mount Script Name <EMPTY>
6.) Disk Mount Point </opt>
7.) Use SES Button to remove drives <Enable>

In the status below it seems to be ok in my opinion:

Quote:
--- /dev/discs/disc0/disc
Block device, size 14.84 GiB (15938355200 bytes)
DOS/MBR partition map
Partition 1: 14.84 GiB (15938297856 bytes, 31129488 sectors from 112)
Type 0x0C (FAT32 (LBA))
Windows BOOTMGR boot loader
FAT32 file system (hints score 4 of 5)
Volume size 14.83 GiB (15921520640 bytes, 1943545 clusters of 8 KiB)
Status: Not mounted
Status: Mounted on /opt

Also, as you mentioned the "very last build".
Yesterday I did not find the "mega"-version in the "very last build" (from 24.04. -> 46446). Actually I wanted to use that one, but I hoped that the version from 1st April (haha, april fools!) would be "good enough". Also the segmentation fault issue was completely the same with the older version that I used (which was from 2019 some when).
If you really think, that a newer version is the answer, I just checked and found a similar version in release 46395 form 19.04...

Is there any way for me to find out about the compatibility? honestly I am a bit lost of where I can extract this kind of information ^^"

Edit: I checked with "uname -r" and got this:

I think you then have to use on older Entware build for K2.6 there is a thread about it somewhere, or use the new K4.4 build (which are in the K3X folder).

Why are you using a K2.6 build?

There surely is a wiki for the E3200 detailing this?

Well, honestly:
I used it so out of inexperience.
I installed it back then 2012 when I got the router and stuck to the K2.6 as I thought "that one works, so just get newer releases of that one".

Also referencing to the thread existing for the router:
Quote:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=138558&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=465

the people seem to stick to the K2.6...

On a quick note, I did not find a compatibility list at hand (just to be sure, the K4.4 is not crashing something).
Should the version that I found here:
Quote:
dd-wrt.v24-46395_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-nv64k.bin

cause troubles? Or where else can I check versions that should work?

I think you cannot switch kernel versions on later builds just like that.
There is an upgrade path somewhere @kp69 knows more about that or maybe that is detailed in the wiki?

Just use dd-wrt.v24-46446_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e3200.bin so with the router model in the build.

Research the build threads if one of the routers in that K3X directory is confirming success you should be good, I saw someone with an E2500 reporting success so you should be good but research the upgrade path

Ok, great. Thanks a lot for the information so far.
Then I will try to research a little more for the updates und try to eventually and up with the version mentioned by you!

Edit:
I found in the thread:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=324361&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30

The following:
freshcodemonger@gmail.com wrote:
Router/Version: Linksys e3200
File/Kernel: dd-wrt.v24-42954_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e3200
Previous/Reset: defaults then reset in gui / dd-wrt.v24-43028_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv60k.bin
Mode/Status: AP / working well stable
Issues/Errors: Previous version couldn't get VAP to broadcast with security. Broadcast working now. Apply settings for configuration had issues but save and reboot for adding interfaces worked.

So it seems there was already a upgrade from K2.6 to K3.X and it seemed to be successfull.
So I will go with the version mentioned by "freshcodemonger@gmail.com" and then upgrade further to a higher version later on.
Whish me luck..

router OS is linux, entware is also linux i dont see any reason to use fat32... NTFS and fat32 are only to host media files and some samba stuff...just my 2 cents...

The E3200 doesn't support ext2, ext3, or ext4. It's an 8MB flash image.

@OP: please upgrade to the most recent release. You will be missing key vulnerability patches if you don't.

It seems you are wrong about this!
Little spoiler: EXT2 works perfectly fine!

After the update to the latest version (link below... thanks for the hint, but that was my intention all along... and for a good reason as it seams), I recognized, that the handling of USB-devices changed with the new version (well.. a jump of versions of 1 year...).
So my USB-Stick was not automatically mounted as the /opt...
And as it still was FAT32 formatted, it did not have a real UUID I could configure in the system...

At home, I finally could format the USB-stick to EXT2 file system (with UUID "OPT") and with that the stick was - again - properly recognized by the router and (automatically) mounted correctly.

Alozaros wrote:

Actually it is not even possible to work properly with FAT32, as it seems that there is no possibility to set a "proper" UUID for this file system and thus you can not automatically mount the UBS-Device e.g. for the /opt...

So with the version:
Quote:
https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2021/04-24-2021-r46446/broadcom_K3X/dd-wrt.v24-46446_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e3200.bin

the latest existing errors for the installation of the entware vanished and everything seemed to be applied successful.

Then I finished the remaining stepts from the wiki-descirption for the installation:
Quote:
opkg update
opkg upgrade

After that, I could simply install curl with the command
Quote:
opkg install curl

aaaand I am done.

So everything necessary remaining is to get back to company where I have the curl command that I initally wanted to use and see if everything works out properly... but all necessary tools seem to be in place so far without any crashes.

Thank you all for helping so fast!
From my side, the thread can be closed!

KP-69 just to let you know, my 1043v2 has 8MB and has ext2/3 support Smile may be you ware thinking of something else...m8

M4lkavianic Im glad you sorted your issue..
In the past, i was pulling my hair, been rushy and trying to install Entware on a new 8GIG USB fat32, until ive found im terribly wrong and need ext2 ... Laughing Laughing

It seems as if the ext4.ko kernel module does exist on the E4200v1 and the TL-WR1043NDv2. The K3.10 images for Broadcom didn't have that kernel module before that I recall. Duly noted, thanks for that.
