I'm looking at moving to cable internet from DSL, and it will be behind a controlled by me DD-WRT router (not stupid enough to trust a cable company with my network). Question is if it's worth the extra money to go with a DOCSIS 3.1 w/ PIE for a 100-200Mb tier or if the PIE+ more efficient channels are not worth it with the DD-WRT setup (not sure if Comcast even uses or will use the 3.1 channel system for slower tiers).
Input from people with cable experience?
I tried to find a straight up answer before posting, maybe just didn't look up the right keywords.
Just clarifying - I should interpret the links to modems as "yes, even behind a Asus RT-AC56u not doing any wireless duties and running dd-wrt's PIE or CAKE there would still be benefit to having a AQM-equipped DOCSIS 3.1" (probably if nothing else in case of misconfiguration on the router, right?)
Finally hit the right search terms after 4+ hours. Evidently there is improvement if you chain CAKE or FQ_CoDEL on the router with the PIE in the DOCSIS-3.1 modem vs just having a single QoS in the router (or just relying on the 3.1 modem).
Now to fight with Comcast to figure out what if any non-Puma modem has Cable Haunt fixed. Trying to get a reliable answer from them on anything is like trying to get one from a politician selling used cars.
