Hello,
brand new to DD-WRT and need advice, eventually help.

I would like to convert my old Linksys E4200v1 router to a network switch with connected USB disk. The USB disk is very important as I want to stream music and store some not so important documents.
If such combination is possible I would like to use the router yellow input to connect to my existing router as I need 4 LAN outputs for my devices. WiFi should be NOT active on this device!

If such configuration is possible I need also advice how to install the firmware.

Thank you very much!

To get the best out of DDWRT and the forum read the forum guidelines with helpful pointers:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=324087

If you have not already read the forum guidelines, please do !!

I will transfer this thread to the right forum for you.

There are wikis about linking routers (there are wikis about a lot of things):
https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linking_Routers

Have a look at Wireless Access Points

Thank you for moving my post to correct category.

I read the info how to convert the router to a switch, but still unclear if the USB disk will work and where from I download the latest DD-WRT firmware for my E4200 v1.

Ok, let's throw caution to the wind: The current release is r46395.

Depending on your intentions, flash the K2.6 mini trailed image:

dd-wrt.v24-46395_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-e4200.bin

Then the mega-nv60k K2.6 image:

dd-wrt.v24-46395_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv60k.bin

And finally, you can opt to flash the K3.x mega image, which is now actually K4.x:

dd-wrt.v24-46395_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e4200.bin

Of course, this totally negates the information in the device wiki or my previously posted upgrade path for Broadcom MIPSR2 devices, but should work without caveats.

DISCLAIMER: I am in no way responsible for this procedure if you brick as it is not my responsibility for your TL;DR and lack of research.

Still is open the question related to USB and this https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Switch isn't valid in case that I install any of the mentioned fw version?
You have to be totally explicit 😊 as I'm really unexperienced.

K3.x builds do not contain miniDLNA server for E4200V1!

You were talking about streaming media content! It will depend on you application, if it can run with file-service only (like KODI) or if you application will require a DLNA-media server.

If you require DLNA-Service, your're restricted to K2.6 builds or more recent router hardware (more memory), which will support miniDLNA in K3.x builds.

Thank you PowerPoldi,
for streaming I don't need DLNA or uPnP.
For streaming from the USB disk I would like to use my Bluesound Node 2i which is probably using one of those protocols. Multicast, NFS or SAMBA but not sure.

Thank you very much for help PowerPoldy,
In the dd-wrt is no USB disk available, so my next walk is directly to the garbage bin.

I have 5 of these. The USB port works, strictly depending on how you formatted the USB drive.
