Doesn't really seem like many people are collaborating under this sub-forum, likely because it discusses paid activation devices, and the general rule of thumb is that there is no public community support for the paid activation devices, but I think that is irrelevant anymore. If people aren't chiming in or publicly discussing UBNT devices on here, that is a failure on the community's part.

Hello,
Thanks.
There is obviously work going on because though I found the BETA for the Bullet M2(HP) dated last month.
Interestingly it states:
In recent factory firmwares Ubiquiti prevents any installation of third Party
firmwares by using signed firmwares. any unsigned firmware cannot be installed.
since it is not possible to downgrade this firmware to a previous version which
did not go that idiot move it is required to use a special flashing method.

Useful info as all the posts regarding this device are many years old now.
I suspect though that the drivers have been updated by the team recently probably BECAUSE it needs paid activation, developers have to get paid somehow but conversely if you pay you would expect something that works and is up to date. One would also expect some sort of support though. This is obviously not the place for the reasons you gave.

Hi,
I used the latest image I could find from the Beta directory for the Bullet2M(HP). Dated this month.

Copied over the flash install file into tmp as per instructions.

On running the bin file, it complained of a missing directory (could not create) in /proc/ (which does exist) and then exited.. I forget the exact file, should have written it down.
Now I can't SSH into it, tried all the IP's assigned on the network, nothing works.
I take it its bricked. The lights are twinkling though so its not totally crashed.
Is there any other way to gain access and try again? I have another device but am loath do repeat the process without some more info.
Any suggestions?

Better still, I could send the other device to someone more knowledgeable to see if they can install DD-wrt on it. (Paid of course)
I can only assume the flash image needs updating, I followed the instructions to the letter.

Hi,
Yes I'd forgotten that too. Ooops.. Wink
I can re-instate the stock firmware by tftp so not bricked.. phew.
I tried again and I had the same issue, this time I made a note.
Initially an error.. /proc/ubnthal/.uf is a non existent directory.
Then theres:
unlocking kernal
writing kernal
unlocking rootfs
..Done.

/proc/ubnthal does exist

Unsure what to try next as I can't downgrade to a pre-signed firmware version. I still can't SSH into it or ping it once flashed, until I revert to stock AirOs firmware.

You should be able to downgrade to and older version of stock firmware via ssh. Perhaps the oldest version available. That may be the issue.

Hi.
That used to be the way with this device I'm told.
Now they have a signed firmware so you can only downgrade a few step since they introduced it. I tried, doesn't work any more.

I quote the install instructions below, from download site at https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2021/04-13-2021-r46329/ubnt_bullet_m2_hp/.

In recent factory firmwares Ubiquiti prevents any installation of third Party firmwares by using signed firmwares. any unsigned firmware cannot be installed.
since it is not possible to downgrade this firmware to a previous version which did not go that idiot move it is required to use a special flashing method. simply copy flash-upgrade.bin with scp/winscp to your ubiquiti device into the /tmp directory. login with ssh to your ubiquiti device and execute the following lines
chmod 700 /tmp/flash-upgrade.bin
/tmp/flash-upgrade.bin

the router will now flash itself. once ths command has finished, simply powercycle your device.

Seems simple enough but doesn't work for my M2(HP)'s. Shame really cos I was obviously was going to activate both of them and pay for the extended frequencies as I am licenced to use some of the the 2.3GHz band.
I think I'll have to try Open-WRT. They have a fix for this signed firmware issue but looks like I'll have to re-compile the package after editing to get what I want.

Thanks for your help anyway.

Well, unless there was some kind of magic voodoo added to the file in question to make it update, you could always try this method to downgrade stock firmware or to flash DD-WRT:
