Like to see if any experts here have seen the problem below before and can provide a fix...

After lots of unsuccessful flashes and resets using various combinations of methods to upgrade my R9000 router firmware beyond 42366, I have lost 2.4G wifi since the first couple of flashes. Reflashing and resetting much more didn't bring back the 2.4G wifi nor got me beyond 42366. Thinking that I have a hardware issue, I flashed back to stock to talk to Netgear support hoping that I can get a RMA. They told me I have a software issue and wanted me to pay for extended support, but I didn't go through with it because I really just wanted a RMA as I had hardware warranty. I resorted to Voxel's latest firmware to use the telnet function to follow the post below about Netgear's wifi bug, hoping to bring back 2.4G by using wlan up and down, and using the nvram commands...
https://www.snbforums.com/threads/r7800-no-wifi.68728/

When I did a >wlan up, I get the response below in telnet. Has anyone seen this before? I think I might be missing wifi drivers?
EDIT All radios 2.4, 5, and 60 are enabled in the advanced menu, but no 2.4G wifi signal and 5G toggles on/off every 2 mins.

All of the wifi died on my 2nd-hand R9000. I haven't checked to see if there is an update to Voxel's firmware since I wound up flashing it, it's been sitting in a box collecting dust. There is a known issue with these that was noted on the Netgear forums (I don't have the link handy). I may dig mine out to tinker with it. I'm wondering if it has to do with the cooling fan not properly working or something or just a crap design flaw.

Hey there, hope your doing well! I was wondering if you solved your R9000 wifi issues. I ended up keeping the R9000 since I got a $50 discount from Amazon. Should have exchanged it when I had the chance. I decided to give dd-wrt another shot after having network problems with the R9000... I'm a glutton for pain. Laughing I've also posted the same question above on SNBforums to get some more eyes on the wifi problem. Hope someone shines in from there. You should telnet into your R9000 from dd-wrt and try the wlan up and down as suggested in the link above to see if that works for you. We can work together to solve our wifi problems. Once you get me the link your talking about, I can have a look, give it a try, and report. I really want to get to the bottom of this pain.
EDIT I didn't see any cooling issues on my end. The highest cpu temp was about 42C. I even tried shutting down the 60G and it didn't make a difference to temp. Voxel does have a new firmware out.

unless you didn't create a mess with trying different firmware's...there was a solution to it...flashing stock firmware via TFTP than reset and flashing it gain with stock via TFTP...than if the wifi is dead than is dead...
I also had one with dead WiFi sold it to a friend and he is flawlessly using it, with another DDWRT router in a WAP mode, plugged to one of R9000 LAN ports....this will give a WiFi interface to your router https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Access_Point

If possible, need all information about this. Otherwise, prove to Netgear it's a hardware failure and RMA.

Edit: Found all factory stock firmwares.

A couple of posts elsewhere about this thing:

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/NightHawk-x10-r9000-Wifi-radios-will-not-turn-on/m-p/1745274

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/Nighthawk-X10-R9000-Radios/td-p/1874310

I don't know what specifically triggers the issue, but again, I haven't dug it out to tinker with it in a while. I may do that this week.

PostPosted: Wed Apr 07, 2021 22:13    Post subject: R8900/R9000 FAQ (also R7800, read very carefully!) Reply with quote
http://voxel-firmware.com/Downloads/Voxel/Kamoj/FAQ.txt (basically the last half of the FAQ 2021-04-05)
Quote:
Q: How do I reboot the router?
A: I suggest you stay with the Netgear GUI way:
Advanced: reboot

Q: Are there other ways of doing a reboot, and what are the differences?
There are many ways on doing it, e.g.:
1). Router GUI: Advanced: reboot
2). Router shell: /sbin/reboot
Halt use signal=2 done.
Halt send signal to init...
Makes sync automatically. Instructs the system to reboot.
Does not reset mtd ecc error counters.
3). Router shell: /sbin/poweroff
Halt use signal=1 done.
Sends an ACPI signal to power down system.
There is no power off function in the router, so after a long time it will restart.
Resets mtd ecc error counters.
4). Router shell: /sbin/halt
Halt use signal=0 done.
Halt send signal to init...
Makes sync automatically.
Instructs the hardware to stop all CPU functions, but leaves it powered on.
5). Router shell: echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger
# reboot. Hard quick reboot
6). Router shell: echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger
# Simulate a kernel panic. Hard quick reboot and Netgear logging at start.
7). Use e.g. a paper clip or tooth picker to press the "pinhole" reset button very short time (< 1 sec).
8). Router shell: /sbin/reboot -f
Halt use signal=2 done.
got reboot and ppid pgid is 23630|26416..
Halt run reboot(magic)...

Q: How do I reset the router to "Factory settings" (Reset the user configuration)?
A: A factory reset deletes personalized settings including your user name, password,
WiFi network name (SSID), and security settings.
A factory reset is necessary when you cannot recover your password.
See: https://kb.netgear.com/9665/How-do-I-perform-a-factory-reset-on-my-NETGEAR-router
N.B.: Factory reset does NOT erase e.g. the netgear partition.
1). GUI: Advanced: Administration: Backup Settings: "Revert to factory default settings": Erase, Yes
2). Use e.g. a paper clip or tooth picker to press and hold the "pinhole" reset button until the lights change, about 7 seconds.
Release the Restore Factory Settings or Reset button.
3). Router shell : nvram default; nvram commit; reboot

Q: I tried the "Factory reset", but it doesn't reset all settings.
How do I really reset the router to "Factory settings"?
A: It's not possible without very special knowledge.
Using stock "Revert to factory default settings" does not restore the router
to virgin state. It only erases the user settings in the configuration file.

Q: I really want to reset to factory settings! Is there any way to do it?
A: Yes, but I'll not tell, since there is a big chance you brick your router,
and also it would be illegal in some countries to e.g. reset the WiFi-region.

Q: Is there a way to do a "better" factory reset than from stock GUI?
A: WARNING: This might brick your router
Yes, but be sure you know what you are doing, and I take no responsibility
if you brick your router.

1). Download 2 different firmware's:
------------------------------------------------
Voxel: http://www.voxel-firmware.com/Downloads/Voxel/html/index.html
Netgear: https://www.netgear.com/support/download/

------------------------------------------------
2). Unzip the image files from the downloaded firmware zip files

------------------------------------------------
3). CHANGE firmware to a not wanted one:
It is NOT enough to flash same firmware again! Not from GUI and not even using tftp.
You must alternate the version, e.g. between Netgear/Voxel:
Router GUI: Administration: Firmware Update: Locate and select the upgrade file on your hard disk: Browse

4). CHANGE firmware to the wanted one:
Router GUI: Administration: Firmware Update: Locate and select the upgrade file on your hard disk: Browse
------------------------------------------------

5). Erase all configuration data:

R7800: Run these commands from a router shell/prompt:
nvram default
nvram commit
mtd erase netgear
reboot

R8900/R9000: Run these commands from a router shell/prompt:
nvram default
nvram commit
ngmtd="$(awk -F: '/"netgear"$/ {print $1}' /proc/mtd | grep mtd)"
[ -n "$ngmtd" ] && flash_erase /dev/"$ngmtd" 0 0
reboot

------------------------------------------------
6). Save the Router configuration file:
Router GUI: Advanced: Administration: Backup Settings: Save a copy of current settings: Back Up
Make sure the file size is less than 100Kb

Q: My R7800 configuration is corrupt and can not be set. What to do?
A: WARNING: This might brick your router
From router shell/prompt:
/usr/sbin/nandtest -m /dev/mtd11

Q: I have tried different Firmware (Netgear / Voxel / DD-WRT / LEDE / OpenWRT) and now
I can't switch on the WiFi! What can I do?
A: This is a Netgear bug that can happen randomly to anyone when updating any firmware.
Erase all configuration data:
R7800: Run these commands from a router shell/prompt:
nvram default
nvram commit
mtd erase netgear
reboot

R8900/R9000: Run these commands from a router shell/prompt:
nvram default
nvram commit
ngmtd="$(awk -F: '/"netgear"$/ {print $1}' /proc/mtd | grep mtd)"
[ -n "$ngmtd" ] && flash_erase /dev/"$ngmtd" 0 0
reboot

Q: My WiFi can not be switched on. It's on in ADVANCED: Advanced Setup: Wireless Settings,
but the BASIC page and the Kamoj add-on Router Information shows it as off.
Also there really is no WiFi available to connect. What can I do? (@Giudi001)
A: This is a Netgear bug that can also happen when you update the Firmware or at other times.
One reason is if you have switched off the WiFi with the hard button on the router,
and then made a Firmware update. The radios would then have been left unusable.
A1: The smart way: Install Kamoj add-on 5.4b24 or later, and enable WiFi Supervison in Settings.
Within one minute, the WiFi should be working again.
A2: The manual way: Run this command, from a router terminal shell/prompt:
wlan down;wlan up;for i in 1 2;do { [ "$(dni_wlan radio 11a -s)" != "ON" ] || [ "$(dni_wlan radio 11g -s)" != "ON" ]; } && wlan toggle; done

Q: I'm running DD-WRT and can not go back to Netgear stock firmware. What can I do?
A: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/r7800-strange-issue-when-going-back-to-voxel-stock-firmware.46452/
https://forum.openwrt.org/t/netgear-r7800-exploration-ipq8065-qca9984/285/1058#
(ubifs is corrupt and you need to clean this area: 0x000003480000-0x000007900000
- Stop with ctrl-c at uboot prompt and enter this command:
nand erase 0x3480000 0x4480000
- run command:
fw_recovery

Q: How do I use tftp to revive a bricked router, or just flash new firmware?
This is also working if the file system has become read-only,
and to recover from a boot loop.
A: First, do NOT try to flash same firmware as already installed!
You must alternate the version, e.g. between Stock/Voxel or two different Voxel.

Here you have alternative descriptions on how to perform the tftp:
https://kb.netgear.com/22688/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-TFTP
https://forum.lede-project.org/t/netgear-r7800-exploration-ipq8065-qca9984/285/5
https://www.snbforums.com/threads/custom-firmware-build-for-orbi-rbk50-rbk53-rbr50-rbs50-v-9-2-5-2-11sf-hw.71395/post-677496

The Kamoj way:

PREPARATION:
- A TFTP client installed in your computer.
Windows: Enable Windows 10 TFTP, e.g. using pkgmgr or dism:

pkgmgr:
Hold down the Windows Key, then press the “R“ key.
The Run dialog box appears. In the Open: window, type:
pkgmgr /ui:"TFTP"
Click OK

dism:
Hold down the Windows Key, then press the “R“ key.
The Run dialog box appears. In the Open: window, type:
dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:TFTP
Hold down the 2 keys: ctrl+shift
Click OK

You can also read about if at e.g.:
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/enable-tftp-windows-10

Test that the command is enabled by running it from a "DOS" prompt:
tftp

- Your computer must have a static IPv4 IP Address from the 192.168.1.x network
(The router's bootloader’s TFTP recovery mode defaults to 192.168.1.1)
(For Windows 10:
See e.g.: https://pureinfotech.com/set-static-ip-address-windows-10/
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

Verify that your PC still has 192.168.1.100 before trying to TFTP:
Run from "DOS" command prompt: ipconfig

- A new firmware to flash.
Windows: copy or move the firmware image to e.g. C:\R7800-V1.0.2.83SF.img
- An Ethernet cable connection from the router to your computer.
- Disconnect all WAN and LAN port cables except the one to the computer to run tftp from.

SET ROUTER IN TFTP MODE:
You have to do this with the router:
- Power off
- Press and hold a pin in the reset hole
- Power on
- Wait for power LED to stop flashing amber and start flashing white
- Release reset button
- Wait a little, the router is now in tftp-mode!

CHECK CONNECTION:
From your computer:
ping 192.168.1.1

FLASH THE FIRMWARE:
From your computer:
Windows: From the "DOS" prompt:
tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT C:\R7800-V1.0.2.79SF.img
If successful you get a reply like this:
Transfer successful: 31361153 bytes in 12 second(s), 2613429 bytes/s

(R9000 example:
tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT C:\R9000-V1.0.5.2.img
Transfer successful: 36804737 bytes in 28 second(s), 1314454 bytes/s
)

The router will after this restart itself with the new firmware.
Have patience and do not abort this.
You might need to power off/on the router once it has completed its own restart.
If problem try a Netgear stock image.

Q: As soon as I open or interact with OpenVPN or DNS Privacy/Ad-Blocking I get a admin/password request
pop up which only goes away after I click cancel, and I'm sent to the password reset page.
I have tried different browsers and privacy modes with same issue.
A: That problem others have even with Netgear stock firmware (You can search Netgear forum a.o.).
Netgear has had many problems with different character sets through the years and their html code is a
"jungle" of tries to fix it.
I have not been able to correct the issue in the add-on yet - sorry!
A solution is to CHANGE password (NOT just enter your old credentials), or it will stay bad until you do.
Use a password without non-alphanumeric characters. Especially "$" should be avoided.
You should try to not use any of these characters in the password:
"Non-English-characters,$,!, <, >, @, %, *,?, .,+,-,/,|,\,&,=,',",`,´"
If it starts working then add "strange" characters one by one till you find out the "bad" one.

Q: Is it possible to preserve only IP reservations without backup/restore of the whole configuration?
A: Yes. You can even copy the reservations between the R7800 and R9000, using shell commands:
#Backup:
# Insert a USB-device, and check what it is mounted as, e.g. /tmp/mnt/sda1
nvram show | grep reservation[0-9] >/tmp/mnt/sda1/reservations.txt

#Restore:
# Insert a USB-device, and check what it is mounted as, e.g. /tmp/mnt/sda1
while IFS="=" read -r P V; do nvram set "$P"="$V"; done </tmp/mnt/sda1/reservations.txt; nvram commit
reboot

@HELLO_wORLD: You might be able to restart dhcp and avoid a reboot by running:
/etc/init.d/net-lan restart

Q: Is it possible to preserve only port forwarding without backup/restore of the whole configuration?
A: Yes. You can do it using shell commands:
#Show all:
nvram show | grep forwarding[0-9]

#Backup:
# Insert a USB-device, and check what it is mounted as, e.g. /tmp/mnt/sda1
nvram show | grep forwarding[0-9] >/tmp/mnt/sda1/forwarding.txt

#Delete all forwarding:
nvram show | grep forwarding[0-9] | xargs -n1 nvram unset; nvram commit

#Restore:
# Insert a USB-device, and check what it is mounted as, e.g. /tmp/mnt/sda1
while IFS="=" read -r P V; do nvram set "$P"="$V"; done </tmp/mnt/sda1/forwarding.txt; nvram commit
reboot

Q: My R7800/R9000 malfunctions and seems to be corrupt. What to do?
A: There is a sever Netgear bug (in both R7800 and R9000) resulting in corrupt configuration backup files.

This GUI change has caused corrupt configuration:
Advanced: Setup: LAN Setup: Starting IP Address
Advanced: Setup: LAN Setup: Apply

These GUI changes have caused corrupt configuration:
Advanced: Administration: Logs: "Turn off wireless signal by schedule"
Advanced: Administration: Logs: ReadySHARE
Advanced: Administration: Logs: Apply

You current configuration may also be corrupt.
Check it by making a backup and then check the file size!
You can check the size of your backup files, they should not be bigger than 100K.
If they are bigger they are probably corrupt.

A way to check configuration corruption is to:
From router shell/prompt run:
nvram show
When configuration is corrupt this command does never finsh, the command just hangs

If corruption due to too big configuration/backup files:
From router shell/prompt:
nvram default
nvram commit

VERY IMPORTANT: Do NOT try to restore a corrupt backup.

Final words:
I recommend you to make a configuration backup before and after changing router settings,
and then compare the size of the backup files.

Well, that means I gotta throw stock back on it or Voxel and muck around with it, but I don't think the wifi will come back. I think the hardware overheated because the cooling fan never comes on.

It is worth a try, I can confirm the instructions for the R7800 (mtd erase netgear) when going back to stock and you have no wifi

yep it wont hurt...in my case it didnt work...R9000 wifi was dead as a dodo....as well i have the same believe, bad cooling design...many of those on ebay/amazon on sale...this days...ppl must be careful..

yep i can confirm it too, back in the days my 7800 update came off with no wifi, Kong advised me to do 'mtd erase netgear' and it worked out...

Well, that means I gotta throw stock back on it or Voxel and muck around with it, but I don't think the wifi will come back. I think the hardware overheated because the cooling fan never comes on.

yep it wont hurt...in my case it didnt work...R9000 wifi was dead as a dodo....as well i have the same believe, bad cooling design...many of those on ebay/amazon on sale...this days...ppl must be careful..

It is worth a try, I can confirm the instructions for the R7800 (mtd erase netgear) when going back to stock and you have no wifi

yep i can confirm it too, back in the days my 7800 update came off with no wifi, Kong advised me to do 'mtd erase netgear' and it worked out...

Thanks for reporting back, since I was thinking of buying one with broken WiFi. I'll stick with my R7800s for now.

I finally powered up the R9000 that I'd picked up used. Initially no wifi broadcast on at least 2.4 or 5 GHz and no LEDs on 2.4, 5 or 60 GHz. A 7-second reset revealed that it already had an older version of dd-wrt f/w on it (r45729). Immediately updated to r47086 with reset, but no improvement in wifi. In the GUI, only 5 G showed in the wireless menu (no 2.4 or 60), but 5 G had radio OFF in the status and I didn't find any way to turn it ON.

From telnet, tried several times:

Code:
nvram default
nvram commit
mtd erase netgear
reboot

but still no joy. Also tried:

Code:
wlan up
wlan down
wlan toggle
wlan up

but "wlan" command not found (IIRC).

I then TFTP flashed to latest Netgear f/w and noticed that the 2.4 G LED was active during boot, but then dark. All the radios showed OFF in the GUI with no obvious way to turn ON. Reset to defaults again but didn't help.

Then TFTP flashed to latest Voxel's f/w and noticed the 5 GHz LED quite active for first few minutes, and 60 GHz on solid. Surprisingly, not a peep from the 2.4 LED, though. Initially all radios showed as ON in GUI, but still saw no broadcasts on 2.4 or 5. Getting a qca9005 WiGig radio for PC to see if there's any 60 GHz being broadcast, and should have that soon.

One odd thing is that several times when I did a reset to defaults from Voxel's, one or more radios got turned OFF and/or back ON, but I couldn't find a way to turn them ON/OFF manually from the GUI.

Sure, there's a possibility that it's a hardware issue. But it's far from conclusive in my mind. The occasionally active 2.4 and 5 G LEDs give some hope, as does the always active (on Voxel's f/w) 60 GHz. It sure seems to me like it could still be a soft (code or config or nvram) issue.

Questions:

1. With current dd-wrt, why is there no menu for 2.4 or 60, just 5 GHz? Any way to toggle radios ON/OFF from telnet or the like? Does dd-wrt currently support the WiGig 60 GHz radio?

2. I read a user question (basically ignored by Netgear rep) implicating that the radios were being automatically disabled if the unit sensed that the fan or fan control was defective (possibly regardless of temperature). I also noticed that at least one of the f/w GUI status screens on my rig indicated that the wlan temperature was 0 C (indoors in summer, so obviously not possible), while cpu temps seem normal in the 40-55 C range. For peace of mind, I'd like to hear the fan run without intentionally overheating the rig. I read a Netgear rep's reply that the fan temperature setpoints can be adjusted by reloading stock f/w and using the big-brother interface, with various speeds (something like lowest, low, medium, high, highest) each having configurable temperature set points. I checked the stock GUI without the big-brother interface and didn't see anything relevant. Anyone know the CLI commands to adjust the fan temperature set points such as from telnet? If I could set one or more of those setpoints low enough, I think that should let me test the fan.

Maybe if you used the commands for the R9000 and not the R7800, you would get some luck?

have you looked properly?
maybe your router also shows the WIL6210 chip as 5ghz?

for another user, the QCA9984 radios were not recognized at all

nada niente - nothing
0 function

the chips did not even produce heat

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1214356#1214356

the normal error pattern is that the two QCA9984 radios are defective and give no sign of life from itself

you could get the 60Ghz radio to work, but you need a 60Ghz antenna for the QCA9005 card and you can usually only get that by cannibalizing any old notebooks or dock with WiGig.

The chips are quite temperature tolerant.

I know someone who runs a QCA9984 card at 80°C
and i found someone in the OpenWRT forum who put a QCA9994 card (industrial grad) into a MiniPC without ventilation and the card heats up to 120°C

is enough for frying eggs Wink

https://forum.openwrt.org/t/160mhz-on-netgear-r7800/10100/32

i don't know how hot the radios get in the r9000
but in the r7800 it is rarely more than 65°C
