I've read the peacock page and the installation guide, and as I understand it the recommended way to do a flash from oem firmware is to use a trailed build.

I've looked in the beta downloads page (https://dd-wrt.com/support/other-downloads/?path=betas%2F2021%2F01-01-2021-r45229%2Flinksys-wrt160nl%2F) and though I find firmwares for wrt160nt, none are trailed.

I've also searched this forum with several combinations of search terms, always including "wrt160nt", but while I get threads testing the newest releases, I can't find a trailed build.

There is a wiki page for linksys wrt160nl, but it does not point to a trusted trailed release, only to the "where to download firmware" wiki page (https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Index:FAQ#Where_do_I_download_firmware.3F), which also only points to the beta downloads page and this forum.

there is also this guide:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT150N_%26_WRT160N
but its specifically for the series wrt160n, not wrt160nt. I Don't know if they are different, but names are so specific I don't want to risk it

I found this thread, which further down explains exactly which build to use for a virgin install:

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=306847&highlight=wrt160nl+trailed

Am I misunderstanding something? should I not use a trailed build for wrt160nl?

The Peacock Thread doesn't apply to Atheros routers.
The wiki you linked doesn't apply to the WRT160NL.

https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/WRT160NL

Looking at the difference in image sizes in the current latest release folder for this router,
it looks to me as if you have to flash the linksys-to-ddwrt-firmware.bin for initial flash and
then the wrt160nl-firmware.bin to upgrade to the full firmware image (the wiki for this device
is slightly lacking installation procedure, among other things!).

https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2021/03-26-2021-r46177/linksys-wrt160nl/

I also found this thread regarding TFTP flash of this router as an FYI,
but not having one of these in hand to give you proper flashing advice,
so caveat emptor, YMMV, you've been warned.

Hi! thanks for the response!

I've installed dd-wrt following the instructions on the thread I found (https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=306847&highlight=wrt160nl+trailed)

It worked flawlessly, and the results of the router are on par with what I've seen from commercial stuff.

Thanks for your suggestion of upgrade build! I should be upgrading in the next few days, I'll update this thread on the result of that, for any lost soul googling this stuff.

There have been two releases since my last post. Please report in the build release thread(s). when you flash. Thank You.

https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2021/

New Build - 03/26/2021 - r46177

New Build - 03/31/2021 - r46220

New Build - 04/01/2021 - r46239

Hopefully, you notice a pattern on where to check for new releases and such...
