I've read the peacock page and the installation guide, and as I understand it the recommended way to do a flash from oem firmware is to use a trailed build.
I've looked in the beta downloads page (https://dd-wrt.com/support/other-downloads/?path=betas%2F2021%2F01-01-2021-r45229%2Flinksys-wrt160nl%2F) and though I find firmwares for wrt160nt, none are trailed.
I've also searched this forum with several combinations of search terms, always including "wrt160nt", but while I get threads testing the newest releases, I can't find a trailed build.
There is a wiki page for linksys wrt160nl, but it does not point to a trusted trailed release, only to the "where to download firmware" wiki page (https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Index:FAQ#Where_do_I_download_firmware.3F), which also only points to the beta downloads page and this forum.
Looking at the difference in image sizes in the current latest release folder for this router,
it looks to me as if you have to flash the linksys-to-ddwrt-firmware.bin for initial flash and
then the wrt160nl-firmware.bin to upgrade to the full firmware image (the wiki for this device
is slightly lacking installation procedure, among other things!).
I've installed dd-wrt following the instructions on the thread I found (https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=306847&highlight=wrt160nl+trailed)
It worked flawlessly, and the results of the router are on par with what I've seen from commercial stuff.
Thanks for your suggestion of upgrade build! I should be upgrading in the next few days, I'll update this thread on the result of that, for any lost soul googling this stuff.
