I'm currently still contemplating whether to go for Ubiquiti UniFi APs are not. Suppose that I am, is it possible to run the UniFi controller software on my R7800, perhaps by installing it on a USB flash drive and leaving that drive connected to the R7800? The UniFi controller software has a Linux version so I figured it might work..

Either run all Ubiquiti firmware or all DD-WRT. There is no way to use the controller software with DD-WRT.

Thanks.

I will be running DD-WRT on my router as the router works great. I'm just looking for a way to host the UniFi controller software without having an actual server or that Cloud Key thing they sell.

Check out CF-E380AC or CF-E385AC as alternatives, with QCA hardware and open source support too.

You can use a Raspberry Pi to host a UniFi controller; Windows, Debian, Ubuntu will also support running it. But DD-WRT does not support interfacing with the UniFi controller is what I was getting at. So, if you want to deploy UniFi controller, you have to stay with stock firmware on your APs. DD doesn't have the required packages to install UniFi, and I doubt Entware supports what is required.

Been eyeballing your suggestions as well but keeping the option open for Unifi APs (with Unifi stock FW) for now.

i run a DD-WRT router and host the unifi controller on my windows server. dd-wrt has a better router than ubiq IN MY OPINION. i had to go in to each system seperate to change things but, it's fine for me

I run a non wifi R9000 as main router/YAMon host, Asustor NAS for DHCP duties, and 3 Unifi APs serving 20 wifi devices.

Due to Linux requirements that non of my boxes meet I do the AP hosting from my gaming machine.

Works ok here.
