got gigabit internet now so was looking for a router that can max out the vpn speeds on it. what sort of hardware would i need cpu wise?

whoa those are impressive. is i5 able to hit 1000mbps on vpn for a single user? haswell xeon e3-1225v3 maxes out around 400mbps for single user, multi user it uses all threads and maxes the line but im after single user speeds.

The problem is that OpenVPN is single threaded so you need a processor with high clock speed/IPC and AES off loading (the encryption can run on another thread)

WireGuard is much easier and much faster (but less mature) WireGuard has typical 3 times the performance of OpenVPN on lower specced hardware like soho routers.
I have seen an R9000 doing over 500 Mb/s using WireGuard

thats some good options there. im gonna post in the general section and see what sort of consumer stuff is available to be modded of the shelf. x86 seems great option but as you said im limited to single thread speed.
i wonder if there are dual core i3 cpus that have a base speed over 4ghz?

was wondering for just general routing of 1gbit wan to multiple lan devices will the intel atom devices handle it?
