What's a recent suggested firmware for a Linksys WRT54GS v1.1 router?
I ask because I see there was some Dnsmasq vulnerability about a month ago now (also mentioned here... https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=327899 ) that I just noticed a moment ago. I am still running a DD-WRT from May 2020. is this a problem? _________________ Primary Router: Linksys WRT54GS v1.1 /w dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic (r46640 May 13th 2021) ; new Panasonic capacitors Feb 11th 2020 | Backup Router: Linksys WRT54GS v6 /w dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic (r46640 May 13th 2021)
PING abcstats.com (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.033 ms
which is normal when the ad-filtering is working since if you get a real ping from there it shows something like...
PING abcstats.com (23.221.222.250) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from a23-221-222-250.deploy.static.akamaitechnologies.com (23.221.222.250): icmp_seq=1 ttl=49 time=44.9 ms
which was typically expected in the past. but since I changed to the r45735 (Feb 11th 2021) build when I did the ad-filtering stuff it now shows...
ping abcstats.com
ping: abcstats.com: Name or service not known
so with all of that said... I assume the ads are still being filtered, but just a bit differently than it used to be?
p.s. but besides that change, everything else seems to work okay so far on r45735. _________________ Primary Router: Linksys WRT54GS v1.1 /w dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic (r46640 May 13th 2021) ; new Panasonic capacitors Feb 11th 2020 | Backup Router: Linksys WRT54GS v6 /w dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic (r46640 May 13th 2021)
Can you ping other internet addresses without issue? No changes in your normal configuration?
Yeah, it seems okay otherwise (as to my knowledge my router is configured like I typically have it). I can ping say google.com for example without issue as it responds like expected...
PING google.com (172.217.9.46) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from ord38s08-in-f14.1e100.net (172.217.9.46): icmp_seq=1 ttl=117 time=31.6 ms
but after looking around some more a moment ago I am starting to think that the sbc.io hosts link does not even work as it does not appear that the ad-filtering is active right now.
does DD-WRT still not work with https connections? ; because if it did, I would just change that http sbc.io link to the MVPS HOSTS file instead but it uses a https connection only and the last I knew dd-wrt won't work with a https connection. _________________ Primary Router: Linksys WRT54GS v1.1 /w dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic (r46640 May 13th 2021) ; new Panasonic capacitors Feb 11th 2020 | Backup Router: Linksys WRT54GS v6 /w dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic (r46640 May 13th 2021)

Indeed, wget will not work with https, last I knew. But curl will, if the router has it. I don't think the WRT54* series devices has curl included, though. You can always try the other hosts file using http? _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Okay, thanks for the info as I kind of figured I had to use a http link as it worked in the past on MVPS HOSTS file but it appears they changed to HTTPS quite sometime ago now and it no longer works.
but given what you said, it looks like I am pretty much out of options as far as ad-blocking on the router goes since it appears just about all hosts files use https lately.

so at the moment ill have to disable the ad-filtering through dd-wrt, sadly.
but other than that issue, which appears not to be a dd-wrt flaw, dd-wrt seems to be okay so far on my WRT54GS v1.1 router using r45735. but if anything acts up, ill probably make a comment in this topic in the future. _________________ Primary Router: Linksys WRT54GS v1.1 /w dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic (r46640 May 13th 2021) ; new Panasonic capacitors Feb 11th 2020 | Backup Router: Linksys WRT54GS v6 /w dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic (r46640 May 13th 2021)
