Hello.
I currently use a Netgear R7000 with DD-WRT. I have it seems, using shortcut engine, maxed the throughput of the hardware on about 380 mbps.
I have googled, read posts, articles and threads and it seems that that is the limit on Broadcom for well documented licensing decisions.
What I need/want is:
- routing to about 30 LAN devices, both wifi and wired via a microtik switch into one of the router's lan ports.
- OpenVPN server permanently but it is only used when I am on holiday for instance, to connect to my home network.
- stubby for DNSoTLS.

What I do not need currently:
- QOS.

Here comes the question:
What is the recommended Atheros device or devices to run this and fully utilise the 550 mbps WAN. I might be able to upgrade to 1 gbps in the future, but it might be another year.

I am clear that if it is beyond consumer grade routers that I need to either look at the unifi, pfsense, etc. of this world. They are nice but I prefer the lower cost but most importantly the customisation possibilities on DD-WRT.
Thanks in advance.

Eeek!! How much?!
I guess performance has a cost. The R9000 is more expensive than the unifi dream machine that I thought it was too much for a router.
I need to look at the R7800 now.

so far Netgear R7800 is the best price/performance/DDWRT support router, still versatile to handle good performance of Atheros radios, vlans, OpenVPN, Wireguard, and near 1Gig (950 ish) WAN speed...

Netegar R9000 has a quite of misunderstandings, in terms of design...WiFI radios easy to burn, as its heat dispersing is not great, as well an odd dual switch that is still incapable of vlan segmentation as good, as R7800 is...apart of that R9000 will deliver great OpenVPN/Wireguard performance a bit better range good throughput performance either via WAN port or SFP+ LAN 10GbE (10Gbps) port..

Use camelcamelcamel.com to keep an eye out for a good price for the r7800 on amazon. Used is a risk, but could be worth the hassle of returning until you get a good one. I got a used r7800 for my sister around $135 almost two years ago and it's been great. I got mine brand new in November 2018 for $160. Keep an eye out for price drops.

If you go the used route, I'd suggest only getting used if it's shipped/fulfilled by amazon, so that a return is painless. Go for "very good" or "like new" though. Lower than that and stuff could be missing and they may ding you for a return.
Buying used from a seller directly isn't worth even the thought of trying to return a dud, for me.

Or take the chance and check offerup, eBay, craigslist, amazon, etc. for USED R7800s. I think I paid ~$80 for mine and it's still a tank.

i always get my R7800's from ebay, so far i ordered 10+
never had an issue, also have 1 brand new as a spare unit (well...its been used and tested)...recent prices on ebay/amazon are good, last month ordered 2 units for a projects all second hand, this unit is a rock solid, as a design and hardware....the only week point it could be PSU if they are from different countries like UK, EU or US but this is easy to cope with...just make sure you get the correct PSU if so...

R9000 many faulty (radio) units, so be very careful when you get a second hand...
but even thow, its easy to mitigate the faulty radio issue...with extra cheap router plugged to its LAN port as a WAP...
