Hi, I'm a complete novice in networking, but anyway, I managed to set up NordVPN in DD-WRT, following Nord's and this forum's instructions.

My problem is that my connection to the OpenVPN is extremely slow, not even good enough to stream Netflix correctly.

My readings are the following:

Cable, no VPN: 3ms 243.79 25.40
WiFi, no VPB: 3 ms 248.59 25.61
Cable, VPN: 47ms 22.51 25.40
WiFi, VPN: 47 ms 21.93 23.64

I already contacted NordVPN's customer service and they told me this is normal and there is nothing I can do, but try different servers and change between UDP and TCP, which I already did. They also said that this happens because routers are not multithreaded, they use a single core and are not as powerful as computers or phones.

I did not completely understand these reasons and do not know if they are true since when I connect to their app, the connection does not slow down that much.
I also searched in this forum and other websites nut have not been able to correct this issue.

Given the above, I want to know the following:

- Are the reasons shared by NordVPN true?

-Is there any way, through configuration in the router, to overcome this issue

I would appreciate any input.

Finally, I am planning on getting an Azus RT-AC1750 or RT-AC86U.

-Would this help in any way to increase download speed?

I am currently running a Netgear R6400v1 router.
The installed build is DD-WRT v3.0-r44863 std (11/24/20)
My ISP download speed is 250 MBps.
I am located in Mexico City and the VPN server is in Texas.

Thank you very much!

You will never get 100% throughput of your ISP speeds over a VPN. I don't see any glaring issues for your hardware, but perhaps @egc or one of the VPN gurus can chime in.

Don't waste your money on Broadcom based hardware. Get a R7800.

Besides getting faster hardware, run wireguard. It's faster than OpenVPN, as it runs in the kernel. With OpenVPN, linux have to constantly switch from kernel to user space.

Have you balanced the task among cores? OpenVPN will use a single core. Locate VPN and WAN on one core and LAN + wifi on the other.

The "top" command will show what the cores are doing.
