Hi Guys,
I have been using a R7000 with NordVPN for a couple of years and am happy with everything other than the VPN throughput.
I was wondering what the best option would be to improve this if I splashed out and didn't curb my spending.
My needs for the router itself are very simple - just the fastest possible VPN throughput.
The router will sit in front of an existing firewall and all of my internal routing and VLANs are handled there or on switches. All wireless needs are a handled by several APs dotted around the property.
I'm assuming that the fastest results will be from an all singing, all dancing router full of expensive wireless kit I will not require - it just seems a shame to shell out on something that's very expensive because of the latest wireless specs when it won't get used.

VPN takes resources, R7000 has a max of 30-35Mbit performance with VPN, for better performance use Wireguard instead..it will squeeze a bit more throughput...
for better results, you'd need better router

I built a small form-factor PC out of spare parts (essentially cost me nothing) to support my OpenVPN client (dd-wrt x86, off a USB thumb drive), so now I don't have to upgrade my otherwise perfectly adequate router (ASUS RT-AC68U) to get all the performance both my ISP and VPN provider (ExpressVPN) can deliver.
Btw, the PC only consumes a measly 18 watts.

Eibgrad, good point. I should have thought of that. I've just binned a load of kit I could have used for that!
I could add a nic to my vmware server and spin up a new vm for it I suppose, I don't have that powered on all the time though because of power consumption.
Also if I'm away, it's so much easier for me to have something physical with a button that I can talk my wife through turning off and on again if there's a problem. There's currently a few pictures she has of the things to power cycle and the order to do it in!
I'm definitely going to give a mini pc or a new vm some further thought though.
