I was running 44213 when the router locked up. All I did was turn the power off and on like usual except this time it came back in a boot loop.
There is no problem loading any version of stock D-Link firmware (I've tried 102, 105, 106, 108). However, when I try to load any version of factory-to-ddwrt.bin it goes back into a boot loop. This happens whether going through the recovery mode or logging into the firmware and upgrading.
How can I get dd-wrt back on this router?

Thanks for the quick reply. I reset it when this happened.
It's back on stock 1.08ww and working. If I press the reset will it not bring me back to recovery mode?
Also, which version factory-to-ddwrt should I flash and from where, the stock upgrade page or recovery page at 192.168.0.1?

A hardware or factory reset is done after it has been powered on for a little while, fully booted.
Don't hold reset during or immediately after power on. I linked r44251 in the previous post.
I don't know if this is still necessary for your router, but see the second post in the thread below.
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=312507 But, I thought this bootloop issue was fixed.
If not, use dir880-factory-to-ddwrt-r30342.bin then try ddwrt-webflash-dir868-880-r43028a-patched.bin ... Last edited by blkt on Tue Sep 29, 2020 21:20; edited 1 time in total

Thanks for the link to firmware...I had downloaded that version.
I'll try the reset. Where do I flash this, from the stock upgrade page or recovery page?
Also, what is the patched version? The dir-868 didn't flash last time I tried,

Stock upgrade page for factory-to-ddwrt, DD-WRT upgrade page for webflash, and quarkysg made some custom builds.

Thanks for you help. I'll try the reset and post back.
Any idea why it went sideways from powering off?

Also, which build version stock is preferred? Any I should avoid, such as newer versions if they will affect going to dd-wrt due to signature check or otherwise?

Ancient astronaut theorists suggest the answer can be found by downloading them all for safe keeping, also profoundly say yes.

Those aliens again...
I gather 1.08ww should be fine to work from?

Over the last while, I have tried so many versions from 26653 to 44251 which you linked, including quarkysg 30432 and none work to go from factory to dd-wrt. The router keeps getting stuck in a boot loop. This has been tried from stock versions 102, 105, 107, 108.
Am I missing something basic here or is there a bigger issue?
I've had dd-wrt on this router as far back as 2015 or so - this just doesn't make sense.

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=312507 (same thread I linked above). From quarkysg:
"DO NOT use the firmware images from the DD-WRT website past r30432 or it’ll send your DIR880L into a boot loop.
Do the following to upgrade your DIR880L to DD-WRT:
1. Download the appropriate factory-to-ddwrt firmware image for DIR880L from the link below (from the folder named factory-to-ddwrt)
https://app.box.com/s/b4v1s342ef2dpd52j02lqtuzi1oiipco
2. Upgrade your DIR880L using firmware downloaded in Step 1. You can do it in the D-Link firmware upgrade page.
3. If Step 2 is successful, you should be able to log in to DD-WRT at http://192.168.1.1
4. Download my latest build r33772 from the link above." Note : this build is no longer latest from quarkysg.
"5. Upgrade your DIR880L again using DD-WRT firmware upgrade page.
6. After Step 5 completes, reset to factory default and start configuring your upgraded router."
I don't have your router, but guessing maybe you need to downgrade to an earlier stock firmware. Maybe not.
https://supportannouncement.us.dlink.com/announcement/publication.aspx?name=SAP10189
http://legacyfiles.us.dlink.com/DIR-880L/REVA/FIRMWARE/
I notice quarkysg says to (only ) reset to factory defaults (from web GUI, not a hard reset) after the final upgrade.
So, maybe this is the step that is required. If this is the case, only do a hard reset when on stock firmware.
Don't reset during an upgrade (always keep dropdown selected "Don't reset") instead use Factory Defaults tab.

I have done all of the above and still boot loop. It does not matter which version of D-Link stock I go from up to version 1.08. I am hesitant to try newer as they may lock out certain downgrade ability.
I'm not sure if quarkysg is suggesting to not use after 30432 permanently or just for the upgrade. I was using 44213 and many others in the 4xxxx build series just fine for a while (reboots, resets, change config, restore config etc).

Edit: Okay I need to read more carefully, r30432 is about factory-to-ddwrt and also a warning about newer builds.
Also, edited a previous post in bold to reflect the correct factory file, dir880-factory-to-ddwrt-r30342.bin (sorry).
I really do not know which modern vanilla BS builds are okay for DIR-880L, but would trust quarkysg's patched builds.
Maybe useless, but that EOL dlink firmware page goes back to 1.00B48.
If I were you, would be looking for a deal on a used R7500v2 (EA8500 if you know how to ttl serial flash) or R7800.
