So, I bought this new R7800 router and after struggling for a while I have achieved a somewhat stabile setup.

I have read a lot of threads - in particular on how to achieve a stabile (not necesseraly fast) wifi setup. I have followed the Guru's (msoengineer and others) of R7800 on how to set up wifi and QoS.

The problem is that I have a strange issue which I can only describe as latency on websites on my mobile devices.

There's a 5-10 seconds wait time until a page is loaded (which it does fast enough) - sometimes the page times out and immediately thereafter loads. This also affects apps which are dependant on TCP - I can get past that issue by switching to 4G where there's no latency(!).

I have migrated from an old D-Link DIR-825 with revision 39715 std and never experienced this issue.

The problem is on both 2,4 GHz (NG-mixed) and 5 GHz (AC/N-mixed) as well as guest networks (ath0.1 and ath1.1). I have no issues with wired connections.

I have tried several newer revisions with little succes. I can't use the newest rev. 44251 std as there seems to be a problem with pages not updating correctly (DD-WRT GUI).

Have anyone had success with particularly 5 GHz wifi on other revisions and which?
Have anyone else latency issues on either 2,4 GHz or 5 GHz and resolved those?
I have turned QoS off but will turning on QoS help on this issue?
    Other things to try?

There's no load on the device (max. 0.15 average) and 76% free memory on the device. It's a small setup with few connected clients where one is on VPN.

I'll be happy to post my settings but as I wrote, they're - mostly - setup as adviced.

I acknowledge that similar issues have been discussed in many threads and that I for the time being just have to accept the issue.

Thanks,

there is a lot of WIP on the recent builds,
especially, try an older builds, somewhere around May things
ware kind of ok... in general i dont have a latency issue, but have disconnections....
try bacon interval 100 or tcp congestion control vegas
i do not use rts cts too, no idea what else, post all the wifi settings....
if you go trough vpn or anything like special dns settings and so on...

verified its not a sudden dns/wan issue? and i would update the dir-825 to current builds, the same as the r7800 and see if its happening on that too

Strange things happen when SSID broadcast is turned off- turn it back on. Try that first.

Next, a lot of android phones like to use google dns servers... Try using your own one like cloudflare or quad9.

Weird, changed to Google DNS and the issue is gone. Never suspected that DNS would be the problem but now it seems obvious. I guess I can setup DNS using DNSMasq to hand out different DNS servers according to fixed IP's.

Thanks for the heads up. Changing to unhidden SSID's made no difference in this case.

Thanks both!

managing dns for different devices is easy via iptables rules, instead of dnsmasq,
unless you are not using forced dns or DoT or DoH
off topic...never had any complains or latt issues from androids on my R7800, but im using Stubby, it could be the reason....

iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -i br0 -s xxx.xxx.xxx -p udp --dport 53 -j DNAT --to 8.8.8.8
iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -i br0 -s xxx.xxx.xxx -p tcp --dport 53 -j DNAT --to 8.8.8.8

Thanks Alozaros!

It would seem that all other DNS server work as I am now using Cloudflare. The problem was that out of the blue my "trusted" DNS servers stopped responding. I'm trying to clear that issue with the provider now.

What confused me in the first place was that fixed LAN (internet) worked flawlessly with the same DNS servers. That's why I didn't suspect a DNS problem to begin with.

Your wired devices likely had cached the dns/ip's while wireless clients didn't.
