I have a Linksys Wrt-54gl router that i wanted to use to extend my existing wifi network? I am new to this so i am not sure on the best way to do it? I hear about repeater,extender,bridge? Which is the one for my situation and how do i do it? Also is this router good for this? I have an Asus RT-AC87u router now that gets most of the house but i want a better signal on my deck and garage.

Ofcourse you can use the wrt54gl to extend you wifi-range. The thing you're looking for is called "repeater bridge" There is plenty of useful tutorials on youtube.

However: The wrt54gl is a very old router. Only capable of 54mbps (Wifi "g"). You can use it to experiment and gain some dd-wrt knowledge, but you'll never get the speed you know from the RT-AC87u. It'll just depend on your needs...

Even with more ram and flash, same results as repeater.
As wireless client, it´s just fine to use.

I have one that I repurposed to WFH usage. It is on its own private subnet, lan to wan port on my network...In a speedtest I get about 20-25mb down and about 10mb up. (Wired of course) Plenty for my low bandwidth vpn client.

It is running 43516 happily without complaints.
